Jack Payne, 81, of Amarillo died April 24, 2021.
Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at Washington Avenue Christian Church, 3800 S. Washington St. Private family interment will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.
Jack was born September 23, 1939 in Perryton, TX, he was number 5 of 7 children, and was the only son, to Alvin Lester and Mary Francis Payne. He graduated from Dalhart High School and married the love of his life Shirley Jean Harvey on September 24, 1955 in Amarillo. Since 1973, Jack and Shirley were members of Washington Avenue Christian Church. He was also a member in the Fellowship Class AKA Jim Shelburne’s Great Adventure. Jack retired in 2018 after working for 61 years in construction. Jack was owner/operator of Jack Payne Concrete and was known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren. The family would like to give special thanks to the Charles Walker Construction family for allowing him to do what he loved, and the Gaston Williams family, especially Perry Williams, for their working relationship and dedicating a street sign, “Jack Payne Drive”, to Jack.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Lois Pace and Alice Howell.
Jack is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley; daughter, Janet Ferrin and husband, Bobby of Amarillo, TX; sons, Michael Payne of Dalhart, TX and Jacky Payne of Amarillo, TX; sisters, Frances Warden of Hereford, TX, Helen Green of Mississippi, Mary Lou Ivy of Amarillo, TX and Jessie Casida of Amarillo, TX; and grandchildren, Pattie Frost, Timothy Payne, Mitchell Holmes, Jon Ferrin and Dalton Payne.
The family suggests memorials be made to Washington Avenue Christian Church, 3800 S. Washington St, Amarillo, Texas 79110.
