Jackson Raymond “Jack” Shelton, 92 of Amarillo died Sunday, May 05, 2013. Services are scheduled for 2:00 pm. Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at First Christian Church Sanctuary, 2001 S Wolflin Avenue, Amarillo, Texas. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia, Amarillo, Texas.
Jack was born December 26, 1920 in Blossom, TX to Fred and Altha Shelton. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He earned the rank of Quartermaster First Class on the U.S.S. Mizar and was enroute to Officer Candidate School when the war ended. He earned a BA degree in Education and a MS in Educational Administration from the University of Arkansas.
Mr. Shelton was the superintendent for Plainview/Rover Schools in Plainview, Arkansas from 1952 to 1956. He and his family then moved to Amarillo, Tx. Mr. Shelton worked for Amarillo Independent School District as a teacher at Will Rogers Elementary School and as principal of Sanborn Elementary School. In 1966 he left that position and was one of the first staff members, a unit coordinator for the Amarillo area, at Panhandle Educational Services Organization (PESO) which later became Region XVI Education Services Center. While at PESO he was instrumental in bringing the Head Start program to the Texas Panhandle.
In 1969 Mr. Shelton left PESO to Work at the educational company SPECO and moved to Kaufman, TX. In 1974 he moved back to Amarillo and returned to Region XVI. After leaving Region XVI, Mr. Shelton was the Vice President at the Children’s Learning Center from 1985 to 1991.
He then taught high school English at Boys Ranch. After retirement, Mr. Shelton was a substitute teacher for Boys Ranch, Amarillo ISD, and the Windom School District.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ruby “Billie” Angelette; 6 brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his brothers, Ray Shelton of Memphis, Tennessee and Jim Shelton of Amarillo; children, Cynthia Weir, Celeste Rodriguez and husband, Oscar, Emily Nance and husband Doug, Elizabeth Lott and husband Steve all of Amarillo, Melvin Shelton and wife Suzanne Kembel of Albuquerque, NM and Molly Vulk and husband Marty of North Richland Hills, TX; grandchildren, David S Weir and wife Rebecca of Ada OK, Ray Lott, Patrick Weir and wife Mackenzie, Greg Lott and Paul Nance all of Amarillo, Clark Shelton of Albuquerque, NM; and Olivia, Sophia, and Miranda Vulk of North Richland Hills, TX and four great-granddaughters.
Mr. Shelton donated his body to the Texas Tech School of Medicine.
