Deacon James Richard Ambs, 79, of Amarillo died Friday, Aug. 5, 2011.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the church with Bishop Patrick Zurek as celebrant and Monsignor Joseph Tash and the Rev. John Dalton as concelebrants. Entombment will be in Memory Gardens Mausoleum by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Mr. Ambs was born March 18, 1932, in Anderson, Ind., to Everett and Helen Ambs. He attended Middleton High School in Indiana.
In his early life, Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a medic. He received his master’s degree from West Texas A&M University in Canyon. He served as a teacher in Amarillo Independent School District and within the Catholic Diocese.
Jim was ordained on Oct. 2, 1977, as deacon for St. Joseph and St. Francis Catholic churches and was assigned as the deacon for Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
He married Janet Wisehart on Oct. 19, 1963, in Newcastle. Jim was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother and was loved by so many and touched so many lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Janet; a daughter, Theresa Edwards and husband Danny of Daleville, Ind.; three sons, David and wife Lani, Chris and wife Tammy, and Tom and wife Stacey, all of Amarillo; a brother, Phil Ambs and wife Joyce; two sisters, Su Simpson and Mary Miller; and 11 grandchildren.
