James Binzegger, 90, of Amarillo, died Sunday, November 18, 2012.
Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 PM, Thursday, November 22, 2012 at Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, 1200 S. Washington, on Friday, November 23, at 10:00 am with Monsignor Harold Waldow as celebrant. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Jim was born in Nazareth, Texas on November 4, 1922, the youngest of four children. His father was a blacksmith and his mother was a homemaker.
He was a proud U.S. Marine who enlisted four months after Pearl Harbor, rose to the rank of Master Sergeant, and served his country in the Marine Air Wing in the South Pacific on Green Island, the Philippines, and Okinawa. In 1945, while celebrating the end of World War II at the Herring Hotel in Amarillo, he met Lola Fowler at a New Year’s Eve dance. They were married four months later and shared the next 66 years together.
Jim graduated from Texas Tech University and was an electrical engineer with Southwestern Public Service for more than 30 years before he retired in 1985 to pursue a variety of interests. He grew vegetables on a small farm south of Amarillo for a short time, took six years to drive his 1975 El Camino all over Texas to take a picture of the courthouse in each of the state’s 254 counties, mowed his own grass until he was 88, and relished his role as a full-time grandfather.
Jim was a storyteller, whether about his childhood, the war years, his fishing trips, travels to Mexico, Alaska and Switzerland, or his children and grandchildren. He’ll be remembered for his strong opinions, hardy laugh, deep faith, and unwavering devotion to his family.
Jim was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lola; six children, Janet Lea of Austin, Jay Binzegger of Lakewood, Washington, Sara Youree of Amarillo, Shari Davis of Richmond, Bari Walker of Tyler, and Suzan Diller of Dallas; 11 grandchildren; sister, Germaine Connelly of Amarillo; and many nieces and nephews.
