James Conley Huckaby

James Conley Huckaby, 92, of Amarillo died January 27, 2014.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 1, 2014 in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel with his Grandson, Dallas Stringer of Calvary Baptist Church in Pampa officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.

James was born October 5, 1921 in Lindale, Texas to Ira James and Ola Turner Huckaby. He entered the US Navy in 1940 and retired in 1960 as Senior Chief Petty Officer E-8. James served in the Pacific Theater during World War II aboard the USS Enterprise, which received the Presidential Unit Citation for 11 battles during December 1941 to November 1942, including Battle of Midway, and all other battles from November 1942 to December 1944. He was at Bikini Atoll testing in Marshall Islands. He also served on the USS Saidor, USS Essex, and USS Forrestal. James earned the Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal all during World War II. During the Korean Conflict he earned the Korean Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, and the Bronze Star. At retirement he moved to Amarillo and was a mail carrier for 16 years.

He married the love of his life, Dorothy Mae Hayes, August 24, 1946 in Yuma, Arizona. After his second retirement, Jake and Dot enjoyed travel, Whirly Birds square dancing, and Palo Duro Good Sam Camping Club. Summer travel often included trips to Florida and Colorado with their three grand-daughters.

James is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy, his daughters, Sandra Anderson and husband Roger, and Diane Hunt and husband Lacey of Amarillo. Three granddaughters, Heather Stringer and husband Dallas, Robin Preston and husband Kyle, and Jennifer Hayden and husband Matt. Nine great grandchildren, Mark, Hannah, Brooklyn, and Ella Stringer, Anderson, Lucinda, and Lydia Preston, Harrison and Hunter James Hayden.

Family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 PM Friday, January 31, 2014 at the funeral home.
