James “Jim” Arlyn Huey, 78, of Amarillo, died Saturday, November 10, 2012.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday at Harvest Christian Fellowship with Curtis House, officiating pastor. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery immediately following the service. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.
Jim was born February 24, 1934 in Baytown, TX to J.D. and Erline Huey. He married his high school sweetheart, Jan Lou Stevens on December 3, 1953; 59 years this December. Their love and devotion was an inspiration to all who knew them.
Jim and family moved to Amarillo in July 1971. He served as the Executive Vice President of the Texas Panhandle Builders Association from 1973 to 1982. Among his accomplishments with the Association is the introduction of the Bonded Registered Builders Program. A warranty approach which made contractors and subcontractors accountable for their work on new homes. He established sister chapters trough 26 counties in the Panhandle region. Jim was instrumental in developing several housing communities in Amarillo such as Puckett Place West. There they named a street after him in his honor – Huey Place.
Jim then joined the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (TDMHMR), Amarillo State Center in 1982 as Operations Manager. He worked with Volunteer Services Council to establish a non-profit corporation, Labor Employment Opportunities (LEO) which created labor employment opportunities for clients of the TDMHMR. He was nominated for the prestigious Preston E Harrison award in 1988 and retired from the State in 1994.
After retiring he continued to work for the next fifteen years in commercial real estate with Lowenstern Realty and then as a broker of his own company, Jim Huey and Associates and retired at the age of 75.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; sons, Mark of Amarillo, Jay and wife Mary Kate of Canyon, and Jerry of Dallas; brothers, Dan and wife Linda Huey of Claremore, OK and Fred and wife Cynthia of Fischer, TX; grandchildren, Samantha and husband Clint Black of Stratford, TX and Bret and wife Kendra Huey of Amarillo; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
