James E. "Jim" Jenkins

March 24, 1932 — April 27, 2014

James E.  “Jim” Jenkins, age 82 of Amarillo died April 27, 2014 in Amarillo.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Hillside Christian Church West Chapel.  The Rev. Bob Schroeder and the Rev. Mike Nuthman will officiate.  Burial will be at Llano Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.

Jim was born in Nevada, Texas to Earnest and Ruth Jenkins on March 24, 1932.  After completing high school he served in the US Navy.  He married Layma Tatum in Clarendon on December 25, 1950.  Jim graduated from West Texas State University with a degree in Accounting.

At the time of his death, Jim was a CPA, a profession in which he had worked for over the past fifty years.  He faithfully worked for Earl T. Smith and Associates for over thirty years. Jim was a caring individual and became a great friend to many at the Amarillo National Bank.   He served in many different capacities on boards and held memberships in the Panhandle Chapter of CPAs, the Texas State Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs.  In the early 1970’s, Jim was appointed by the Governor of Texas to serve on the very first Board of Regents at West Texas State University.

Jim was a member of Hillside Christian Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge.  Both he and Layma cherished time spent together traveling and playing golf.  Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.  He influenced many lives for the Lord through his service in his church.

The family will receive guests Tuesday evening from 5:30 PM until 6:30 PM at the funeral home.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jim is lovingly survived by his wife, Layma; his daughter Susan Dawson and her husband Mike of Flower Mound, Texas; his sister, Sharon Walling and her husband George of San Antonio; and his granddaughter, Lauren Dawson of Dallas, Texas.

The family suggests that memorials be made to a favorite charity.
