Mr. Mayfield was born Sept. 21, 1926 in Stone City, Colorado to James and Mattie Mayfield. After high school, James worked in the mines of Stone City. After his only brother, Lester Mayfield was killed aboard USS Arizona, Pearl Harbor, HI. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard USS Ozark in the Pacific.He married the love of his life, Darlene Totty in 1949. They shared 61 years of life together and raised six children. The highlight of James’ life was his family.In 1953, he moved to Amarillo to join the Amarillo Police Dept., where he retired as a Lieutenant after thirty-three years. After retirement, Jim enjoyed coffee on Saturday mornings with family and a good garage sale. James learned that the hardest job in the world is that of an Alzheimer’s caregiver.He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lester, and one sister, Madge.SURVIVORS: His wife of 61 years, Darlene, three daughters, Vicky and husband, Danny Daniels of Amarillo, Sherry and husband, Dan Jones of Dripping Springs, TX, and Donna and husband, Darryl Blackman of Healdon, OK; three sons, James Mayfield, Richard Mayfield and wife, Kathy, and John Mayfield and wife, Mary Ellen all of Amarillo; one sister, Marian Falkstien, 12 Grandchildren and 16 Great-Grandchildren.
