James C. Meeks Jr

July 2, 1925 — January 19, 2009

James was born July 2, 1925, in Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, to James and Mabel Meeks.  He lived in many places throughout his childhood.  After high school, he enlisted in the US Marine Corp, serving in the 2nd and 3rd Divisions during WWII.  He was an Iwo Jima survivor. He married Elizabeth Hansen on June 11, 1945 in San Antonio.
He received his BA degree in chemistry from Panhandle State University in Goodwell, OK.  He and Elizabeth moved to Amarillo in 1950 and he went to work for the helium plant as a research chemist.  He also worked as a service manager for Baker Graphics Company.  He taught at Boys Ranch for ten years.  He then pursued a second career as a nurse, receiving his degree from WTA&M in 1986.  He worked for the VA Hospital for eleven years until his retirement.  He was a member of the DAV and the American Legion.
He was an avid collector of military memorabilia.  He loved to read and had a passion to continue his education.  He was a very loyal, devoted family man who loved animals.  He will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his son James C. Meeks III of Arkansas City, KS; his daughter-in-law Regina Meeks of Arkansas City, KS; his granddaughter Dusti Meeks of Atlanta, GA; his grandsons Baron Meeks and Talon Meeks, both of Arkansas City, KS.
