James Otis., 84, of Amarillo, died Saturday, April 30, 2016.
Memorial Service will be at 3:00 PM Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Lake Tanglewood Community Church., 106 Tanglewood Dr. #B, Amarillo, TX 79118 with Pastor Roger Hubbard officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Jim was born on December 12, 1931 in Lansing, MI to Wayne and Marion Otis. He grew up in the Lansing area an only child. Jim graduated from Michigan State University in 1953 as a chemical engineer. He was in ROTC and was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma. He met Barbara Alward in 1952 at a wedding. They were married on June 21, 1953. Jim was in the Air Force for two years then worked for Dow Chemical in Midland, MI where their two children, Janet and Kirk were born. Jim earned his masters from the University of Michigan. They lived in Ohio for twenty three years while he worked for Battelle Memorial Institute. In 1987 he was transferred to Amarillo and later retired at Lake Tanglewood. He enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and fishing and was a big fan of Michigan State Spartans.
He has been active in the Lake Tanglewood Lions Club and the Lake Tanglewood Community Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Otis is survived by his wife; his daughter, Janet Schlagel and husband, Dennis of Bloomington, IL, his son, Kirk Otis and wife, Katrina of Allen; eight grandchildren and seven grandchildren.
The family requests memorials be made to Lake Tanglewood Community Church.
Visitation will be from 5:30-7:00 today at the funeral home.
