James Temple Slay

March 31, 1934 — August 12, 2010

A graveside service will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery on Monday August 16th at 11:00 a.m. followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. at Washington Avenue Christian Church, with Senior Pastor Jim Shelburne officiating. Arrangements made by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia Amarillo, Texas.   James was born March 31, 1934 in Wellington, Texas to Temple and Bessie Slay. He graduated from Wellington High School in 1951 and attended Tarleton State College and West Texas State College. He married Clara Darling on June 7, 1955. James was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church, where he served as a deacon and volunteered at the Family Service Center. He was employed 36 years as a draftsman for System Engineering at Southwestern Public Service Company. James was a loving husband and father and will be missed by all  who knew him. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nell Knox, and brother, Ed Slay.He is survived by wife Clara; daughter Denise Slay of Amarillo; sons Jimmy Slay of Amarillo and Steven Slay and wife Karen of Lubbock; sister in law Charlotte Slay and grandchildren Jason Slay, Jerod Slay, Justin Slay, and Jesse Slay; two nieces and a nephew. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to the Building Fund at Washington Avenue Christian Church, 3800 S. Washington St. , Amarillo, Texas 79110
