Jim was born February 18, 1944 to William 'Frank' Reid and Birdie Reid. Frank Reid died in 1954 when Jim was only 10 years old and Birdie Reid died in 1989. Jim grew up in Amarillo, Texas and attended Amarillo High School but graduated from Caprock in 1965.

In the early 1980's Jim was a fishing guide in Toledo Bend and ran Alta Vista Fishing and Hunting Camp. He was an avid fisherman belonging to Amarillo Bass Club as well as several other clubs where he won many trophies. He enjoyed fishing at Conchas Lake, Lake Amisted, Greenbelt and Falcon Lake. He was also an expert marksman winning pigeon and skeet shooting competitions in Texas. Jim loved hunting dove, quail and wild turkey.  He had many hobbies including collecting pottery, antique fishing lures, buying and selling antiques and spent many weekends going to garage sales with his family.\

Jim's main career was in the concrete business. He began working with concrete at age 19 starting Jim Reid Concrete, a concrete contracting business, in 1969. He ran and operated this company until it was sold in 2016. Jim was well known in Amarillo as 'The Concrete Man'.

Jim became a born again Christian many years ago. He served as a Deacon at Trinity Fellowship Church beginning in 1983. He was a good man, so loving, gentle and kind. He was a great father and such an amazing husband. He loved his wife, children and stepsons wholeheartedly. He never met a stranger and had a huge smile for everyone. His laughter would fill the room.

In July of 1998 Jim married Sharyn Merritt. Jim and Sharyn were married for 21 years and had a great life together. They were married at the time of his death.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sharyn, of Amarillo; three daughters, Joella Morgan and husband Trent, Jaclyn Roach and husband Chase, and Jaala Reid all of Amarillo; a son, James F. Reid, Jr. M.D. of Amarillo; two stepsons, Trey Merritt and wife, Amy of Amarillo and Jeffrey A. Merritt and wife, Karrie of Fort Worth; thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
