James Ross "Jim" Whitlock

James Ross "Jim" Whitlock, of Amarillo, died at his home on Saturday, January 8th, 2022.

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held in Llano Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 10, 2022 with Ty Jackson, Rev. Joan Gaines, Rev. Will Esler, and Rev. Nick Garner officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home. Masks will be required during the entire service.

Jim was born August 19, 1933 in Borger, Texas to Gilbert and Faye Whitlock.  He attended Borger High School and married Sue Smith in 1960 Amarillo, Texas.  Jim and Sue joined Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1996, and he was ordained as a Deacon on January 27, 2008.

He worked in the oil/gas and industry following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Ross McGill,  who was very active in the oil boon in Borger in the 1920's.  Jim also worked in the ranching industries. He was very involved with Gun Club, winning a State Trap Shoot at the ages of 18.  Jim was an avid outdoorsman, angler, hunter and enjoyed basketball until the age of 63.

As a result of the death of Joni Ann, their daughter, in 1980, Jim and others were instrumental in bringing MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) to Amarillo.  He was active in the organization for many years.  Jim had a very soft heart for animals, children and all underdogs.  As extension of that, he felt called to volunteer at various prison ministries.

He often took off a different direction anywhere he went to visit with people; he made friends everywhere he went.  He was always asking a stranger "Do you want to fight or arm wrestle?"

He is preceded in death by James Ross Jr. his infant son, Joni Ann, daughter, and his parents.

Jim is survived by Sue Whitlock, his wife of 61 years of Amarillo, Debi Brown, his daughter and Bill Poindexter, her fiance', Whitney Brown, his granddaughter and 3 great grandchildren, all of Bartlesville, OK.  Other survivors include, Patty Buckley, sister-in law, Bob Smith, brother-in-law and his wife Judi and four nieces, Becky, Teresa, Lexa and April.

Jim and Sue were blessed by the presence of Janet Findley for many years of faithful service and friendship.  Their two pets, Geegee and Toby, have also given love and adoration to Jim and Sue. The family thanks the invaluable caretakers who made Jim's and Sue's lives much easier and safer during the past two years.  Special thanks to Lannie, Tara, Erin and Megan.  Also, many thanks to Kindred Hospice.
