Jennie Bell Spencer, 87, of Amarillo, passed away on September 27, 2017.
Celebration of Life services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2017at Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church, 1801 N. Hughes St. with Rev. Vurn C. Martin officiating. Interment to follow at Memory Gardens. Arrangements by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Mrs. Spencer was born to Tom Baty and Elizabeth Pruitt-Baty on September 5, 1930 in Clarksville, Red River Count, Texas. She grow-up with her three sisters and two brothers and one cousin.
Jennie was baptized at an early age at Martin Shilo Baptist Church in Clarksville Texas. She also attended school there Clarksville, Texas. She met the love of her life Arturis Spencer. After he returned home from WWII, they married on November 7, 1949.
The young couple then moved to the Texas Panhandle and shortly after settled in Amarillo, Texas and started their family. Out of their union they were blessed with three children were born Thelma, Arturis Jr. and Victoria.
Mrs. Spencer made a career as a domestic housekeeper and cook. However she found her calling and great joy as a Charter member of Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church. There she served many years as an Usher board member, a member of the City Wide Ushers, a deaconess, a faithful member of the mission board. Mrs. Spencer, donated years of service as a member of the NAACP, The Black Historical Culture center, and faithfully served as a member of Wroten High Plains Court Calanthe for many years. Jennie was always willing to serve and volunteer for church functions and activates as well as in her community. She was known as “The Cake Lady” by many, because she donated so many of her famous cakes to her church family, many affiliations, and friends.
Mrs. Spencer was known as “Meme” and “Granny Good” to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved to spoil and dedicated her time to. Meme loved to talk about her many adventures she had with her grandchildren to anyone she met and showing off her pictures of them. They were her pride and joy.
Mrs. Spencer was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and aunt. She was a giving friend and church member. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arturis Spencer Sr., her two sisters Sedalia Aikin and Ida Mae Williams, two brothers Prezel Baty (who perished as a young child) and L.B. Baty, and a grandson Brandon Malone.
Mrs. Spencer is survived by: her sister Corlene Aikin of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her loving children, daughter Thelma White and her husband Frank White, son Arturis Spencer Jr and his wife Ruby Spencer, and daughter Victoria Spencer all of Amarillo; one granddaughter, Shaundra Qvarsell; eight grandsons, Frank White Jr, Kirk White, Howard Malone, Arturis Spencer III, Joshua Spencer, Donald Ray Timmons Jr, Zechariah Greene and Caleb Greene; 16 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
