On November 1, 2009, Jerry Edwin Fullerton left this earth and entered the Kingdom of Heaven. Dad passed peacefully in the comfort of the family home. Sharing in his final hours at his bedside were his beloved wife and family. He will be missed dearly by all, but never forgotten. The feeling of loss and emptiness in our hearts is being filled by our faith that Dad now lives forever in perfection with our Lord, with the knowledge that we shall be joined again with him one day in Heaven for eternity.
Jerry was born February 19, 1929 in the family home to Ben and Fannye Fullerton, the only son of three children. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1947. While in high school, Jerry was a member of the Jr. U.S. Naval Reserve. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1949-1953 based in Wilmington, Delaware; Multry, Georgia; and Lubbock, Texas. He achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant and was a B-25 and B-26 pilot and flight instructor, training at Reese Air Force Base.
After his military duty, Jerry completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering at Texas Tech University. He was employed by Pantex and retired in 1998 after 35 years of service.
While based in Wilmington, Jerry met the love of his life, Joan Elisabeth Dunlap. After seven years of courtship, they married May 23, 1959, at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Wilmington, and had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Dad was an avid woodworker, leatherworker, and coin collector.
Jerry was a man of immeasurable faith. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, everyone listened attentively. We will miss his smile, twinkling eyes, and sense of humor of which he maintained even in his final days. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Jeanette Hodges, and Mary Bess Adair.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; his oldest son Thomas M. Fullerton; daughter Laurel Shores and husband, Craig all of Amarillo; Son Drew Hilliard Fullerton and his wife Kathy of Phoenix, AZ; and three grandchildren, Brant Allan Shores of Canyon, Kaylee Elisabeth Shores, and Benjamin Thomas Fullerton, both of Amarillo.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 6, 2009 at First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Corky Holland officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
The family would like to extend a special heartfelt thanks to Dad’s caregiver, Jerome McCullum, for his compassion and loving care, and to his family for their generosity and sacrifices during our family’s time of need. Also, a special thanks to Caring Senior Services, Craig Rehabilitation Center, and Odyssey Hospice. They are all truly angels among us.
