Groom

Marvin George “Jiggs” Britten Sr., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 1, 2022 in Amarillo.

The family invites you to gather with them on Thursday evening from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia for a visitation and to reminisce his life. A presentation of the flag by the Volleys for Veterans will be at 6:00 PM.  At Jiggs request there will not be a formal funeral service.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Jiggs was born October 28, 1932 in Groom, Texas to Bernard and Josephine Kuehler Britten.  He was involved in family farming from a young age.  Before graduating he joined the US Army.  He served from January 1957 through December 1958 in Asia, more specifically South Korea and completed his high school education.

On November 9, 1959 he married his love, Janie Medlin and together they would spend the next sixty-two years together.  Jiggs spent most of his time raising his family and doing anything that he could to provide for them.  He became known as “Mr. Fix-it” in Groom because when he wasn’t working for the county, he was “fixin” roofs, painting, building and assisting the community any way he could.  He enjoyed constructing things and one of his most prized accomplishments was a dog house that he fashioned after the old barn on the family farm.

Jiggs was able to return to South Korea several times with Janie and also with his sons, and he enjoyed traveling and sharing his memories of his time in Asia with them.

Jiggs was preceded in death by his parents, by a daughter, Tammy Bivens; three sisters, Margaret Babcock, Louise Acker and Leona Newsom; by three brothers, Tom Britten, Ray Britten and James Britten; and by his beloved fur baby, his dog, Brina, who was also his “cruising partner.”

He is survived by his wife, Janie Britten: his daughter Terry Britten of Amarillo; his two sons, Tracy Britten of Amarillo and Jigger Britten and his wife Sandra of Groom; by a sister-in-law, Doris Britten of Amarillo; by a son-in-law Mark Bivens by a brother Melvin Britten of Duncan, Oklahoma, by four grandchildren, Cody, Trey, Staci and Magan; by five great-grandchildren, Graci, Rylan, Tenley, Cooper and Emerson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be made to the City of Groom c/o the Groom Ambulance Service, PO Box 217, Groom, Texas 79039
