Jimmy E. Davis

May 18, 1936 — November 30, 2011

Jimmy Earl Davis 75 of Amarillo ascended to his Heavenly home November 30, 2011. Services are Monday, December 5 at 10 a.m. at Paramount Baptist Church. The family visitation is Sunday, December 4, from 6 -7 p.m. at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.  Graveside services will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born May 18, 1936, in Dodson, Texas, Davis devoted his life to serving God, his family and his career.  Jimmy married Roberta Scobey September 27, 1956.  In 1957, Davis joined the Amarillo Police Department as a Patrolman.  By 1961, he earned a promotion to detective where he received numerous commendations, was featured in several Detective magazines, and received an award from the FBI for outstanding work in criminal apprehension.  During the 1970’s, Davis served as field supervision and lieutenant in the patrol division, became a polygraph operator, and headed the Metro Division’s vice and narcotics unit. In 1977, the APD promoted him to Captain, and four years later, he headed the criminal investigative section. In 1989, Davis served as Assistant Police Chief until his retirement in 1991. He graced the pages the Amarillo Globe News and the screens of local news stations many times during his career.
Following his retirement from APD, Davis continued to pursue other avenues to fulfill his desire to serve and protect the citizens of Amarillo including running for Randall County Justice of the Peace and working another two decades for Panhandle Community Services. Davis never considered himself retired; he said he was “only shifting gears.”
His profound faith in God led Davis to consider going into ministry at one point, then as his family grew, he spread his ministry to his family and friends. His wife and family were his greatest love, pride and joy.  Davis cherished his friendships.
Heaven now adds Davis as a good and faithful servant to the Host of Angels.  Beloved by his family and friends, he always offered logical and compassionate advice when requested of him.  Davis was always ready, willing, and able to assist anyone in need.
Popeye, as his grandchildren lovingly called him, joins many loved ones at the side of Jesus Christ.  His granddaughter, Breezy O’Dell, his father, Joe Davis, Mother, Mertie Davis, his mother-in-law, Lenora Scobey, and three brothers and three sisters precede him in Heaven.
Davis is survived by his wife, Roberta, three daughters; Cindy O’Dell and husband, Mark, Debbie Truman, and Lisa Schwarz and husband Chris; four grandchildren, Keith Truman and wife, Rachel, Shane O’Dell and wife, Stephanie, Chase Bixenman, and Blake Bixenman; and three great-grandchildren, Joey and Clarissa Truman, and Griffin O’Dell and his father-in-law Chester Scobey.
The family recommends memorials to the American Cancer Society, 3915 Bell Street, Amarillo, TX 79109; American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, PO Box 1014, Amarillo, TX 79105, or a favorite charity.
