Ella Joann Dodson Seitz, 86, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away March 28, 2020.

Graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 11, 2020 in Mobeetie Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

She was born December 13, 1933 in Canyon, Texas to Samuel Dodson and Meta Dorothea Schroeder. Her grandmother Martha Ellen Rutledge Dodson cared for Joann and her younger sister Mary Frances after their mother died.  She attended Canyon Elementary and Canyon High School, then earned a degree in math from West Texas State College.  During those college years, she played for Dowell’s Dolls, one of just a few traveling women’s basketball teams.

Joann was introduced to Charles Arthur Seitz, an army soldier stationed in Korea, first as a pen pal.  When he returned to Texas to continue his education at West Texas State College, they finally met in person, and were married May 26, 1955. They we married for 64 years.

Mrs. Seitz was a homemaker her entire life, caring for her husband and two children, Carl and Gale.  She made a point to always be home to greet her family after school and work.  Her meatloaf and mashed potatoes were famous, and Sunday night was for her perfect chocolate chip cookies. She enjoyed traveling, especially to the mountains, though she never once got on an air plane.

Mrs. Seitz is survived by her son, Carl Seitz and partner Sheila Dimmitt of Mulberry Arkansas; daughter Gale Seitz Verheyden and husband Charles, of Temple, Texas; grandchildren Griffin Verheyden Nelson and husband Bernie, of Grovetown, Georgia; Cooper Verheyden of Bend, Oregon; Gracen Verheyden of Temple, Texas; and Collin Verheyden, wife Jen, and great-grandson Crew Verheyden of Flower Mound, Texas.

She is also survived by her sister Mary Frances Dodson Jarrett, niece Kim Jarrett Grisak and Kerry Jarrett, and their families. Also brother-in-law Wendell Seitz and wife Dee, and nieces Sharon Seitz, Karen Lebron, Nancy Talley, Marcella Brashear, Teresa Steinle, and their families.

Mrs. Seitz was preceded in death by her husband Charles Arthur Seitz by only two months.
