Joe D. Hamrick, 94, of Amarillo died October 24, 2018.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Lane Boyd, United Methodist Minister as officiant. A family and friends reception will follow at 11:30 a.m., in the Chapel of the Craig Retirement Community, Main Building, 5500 S.W. 9th. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.
Joe was born April 19, 1924 in Dallas, Texas to the late J.D. and Pearl Hamrick. He attended Lefors High School then enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Upon his discharge, he moved to Amarillo where he met and married Billie Rachel Dew on August 3, 1946.
He played Semi-Professional Baseball in the late 40’s and early 50’s. Joe coached his sons in Kid’s Inc, YMCA, and the Babe Ruth League. He also was a leader in Boy Scouts. Joe worked at and retired from Pantex in 1987.
Joe was an avid sportsman and attended hundreds of sporting events for his sons and grandchildren. He also enjoyed ballet performances of his granddaughter, Lauren. Joe was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Ye Olde Squares Dance Club.
He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Horace, Eloise, Leonard, Jake, Virginia, and Jackie.
Joe is survived by his wife of 72 years, Billie; sons, Michael Hamrick of Amarillo, Marty Hamrick (Kari) of Amarillo; Randy Hamrick of Dallas; 6 grandchildren, Lauren (Henry) Yoshawirja, Charlie Hamrick, Pete Hamrick, Dane (Bethany) Hamrick, Joseph (Katherine) Hamrick, and Aidan Hamrick; 5 great- grandchildren, Irelyn, Bradley, Kason, Kinsley, and Keegan; and many nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, BSA Hospice of the Southwest, The Craig Retirement Community, or Volleys For Veterans.
