Joe was born in Collingsworth County, Texas to Luther and Wynter Irwen. After Joe graduated high school from Dalhart, Texas, he went on to serve his country as a Marine during the Korean War from February 12, 1952 to February 13, 1955. Once he finished his service, he graduated from Texas Tech-Lubbock in 1959. In between serving his country and finishing his college career, he married his sweetheart, Kathy Treadwell, with whom he spent a wonderful 51 years.
Joe was a proud employee of the Dumas Cattle Feeders for 19+ years. He stayed with them until he retired and became self-employed, doing a variety of work. He would do various things from drapery, blind instillations, and even, building storage units and surveying properties in New Mexico. When he was not working on buildings, he loved to cut a rug with his sweetie as a member of the Paramount Baptist Church, Pairs and Square Dance Club, and playing dominoes. Joe was so good at this that he even had a couple of trophies to his name! Joe loved the open road, which often led to him and Kathy traveling by RV to see our wonderful county.
Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Kathy Irwen, son, Scott Irwen, and great-grandchild, Triston Carroll.
Those who will carry on his loving memory are his son, Larry Irwen and wife, Dana, daughter, Susan (Ski) Irwen-Bateman and husband, Keith Bateman; three wonderful grandkids, Lacci Jo Carroll, Cooper Owens, and Autumn Ratterree; eight great-grandkids, Trinity Carroll, Breanna Weber, Wacey Owens, Wylie Owens, Wrigley Owens, Wrenlee Owens, Jaxon Cole Ratterree, and Emma Ratterree and three great-great grandkids, Kingsley Billeter, Carson Billeter, and Oliver Carroll.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch or a 4-H chapter of your choice in honor of Joe Irwen’s memory.
