John Thomas “Big Pa” Wilkie Jr, age 85 of Amarillo, died May 28, 2016.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, June 1st at Temple Baptist Church. The Rev. Ben Durham of Lubbock will officiate. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
John Thomas Wilkie Jr., was born on August 15, 1930 in Gulf, North Carolina to John T. Wilkie, Sr. and Lillian Allen Wilkie. He proudly served in U.S. Air Force for three years, nine months and twelve days. While during his service he was stationed at the Amarillo Air Force Base. John met Betty there and they were married on April 19, 1953 in Portales, New Mexico. He worked for the United States Postal Service retiring after thirty five years and five months of service. He had a passion for old cars and was an active member of Texas Panhandle Chapter Model A Ford Club, NARFE and NALC.
The family will receive guests at the funeral home tonight from 6 PM until 7 PM.
John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marilyn Oldham and a daughter Sue Wilkie.
Survivors: wife of 63 years, Betty Watson Wilkie; daughters, Jan W. Moore-Thomas and husband Buddy of Goldston, North Carolina., Lou W. Bullis of the home and Jamie Wilkie of Royse City; five grandchildren, Brian Moore, Russell Moore and wife Jessica of North Carolina, Jason Nunn and wife Paula of Amarillo, Crystal Elkins of North Carolina and Jimmie Bullis, Jr. of Louisiana; ten great-grandchildren, Brent Ramirez, Brian K. Moore, Jordyn Moore, Alyssa Nunn, Danielle Sanchez and husband Javier, Allie Burney, Crimsun Nunn, Alex Moore, Nicholas Nunn and Fallon Lux Bullis; one great great granddaughter, Kenleigh Sanchez; a niece Kim Love and family of North Carolina.
The family suggests memorial donations be made in John's name to Temple Baptist Church, 3208 S. Van Buren St., Amarillo, Texas 79109.
