John Lord Zimmerman lived for 79 years, 10 months and 10 days passing from this world at daybreak on Monday, September 13, 2010.Celebration of life service will be at 2 pm, Thursday at St. Stephen United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Smith officiating.John was born November 3, 1930 in Davenport, Iowa and moved to Texas when he was five years old. He graduated from San Marcos Baptist Military Academy, served in the National Guard and attended Texas Tech University. He was employed by IBM for 25 years and after retiring he started Zimmerman Typewriter Service. John was a member of St Stephen UMC, Wesley Workers Class and the Stars Choir. John enjoyed barbershop singing and sang with the Golden Spread Chorus delivering their famous Valentine greetings.John was an active member of the Rotary Club of Amarillo and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Among his many other activities, he drove the train at Wonderland Park and was a volunteer for Camp Alphie, a camp for children with cancer.There was always laughter when John was around; he was never without a joke or great sense of humor. His grandchildren’s activities were an important part of his life and he was a loyal fan of Bushland Falcon sports and seldom missed a game.John was preceded in death by his wife Anne, the mother of his children.He is survived by his wife Nancy and his children, John W. Zimmerman and wife Molly, Terry G. Zimmerman and wife Barbara, Sherry Zimmerman Brewer and her husband Larry, all of Amarillo, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren and one on the way. John was also blessed with his “bonus’ family, Toni and Wes Knapp of Amarillo, Wes and Karla Masters of San Angelo, Elise and Steve Rhodes of Bushland, and 14 grandchildren. John is also survived by special friends Dixie, Galen and Emma Weaver.The family gives a special thanks to BSA Hospice and Home Care and to Ruth of Accolade Home Care.The family suggests memorials to St Stephen UMC Music Program, 4600 South Western, Amarillo, TX 79109.
