Kathleen (Lynch) Diaz-Esquivel of Amarillo, Texas passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 16, 2023 at Northwest Texas Hospital. Her loving husband, Pablo Diaz-Esquivel, M.D., devoted daughter Elizabeth Diaz Timberlake, dear son-in-law Charlie Timberlake, and her first-cousins Mary Evelyn Hopkins and Joseph Yost were by her side.
Kathy was born in Pittsburgh, PA and raised in Miami, FL. She graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. She began her professional career in Miami as a film critic and sports reporter. After years as a television news reporter in High Point, NC, Kathy moved to Amarillo in 1981 to anchor the nightly KAMR Channel 4 News.
She then went on to produce and host a daily news magazine format show on KCIT Fox 14, Noonday. As a weekday talk show host, she interviewed a variety of guests: notable Amarilloans, celebrities and politicians (Mikhail Baryshnikov, Lloyd Bentsen and former President George W. Bush were a few highlights). Throughout her career, she was known for asking incisive questions and her dogged pursuit of the truth.
Kathy was a member of the Junior League of Amarillo and volunteered countless hours supporting the Amarillo Museum of Art, the Children's Miracle Network of Amarillo, and the Amarillo Symphony. She was a talented artist, writer and music aficionado. She will be remembered for her vivacious personality and sense of humor - if you heard her mischievous laugh, you knew something good was cookin'. All who knew Kathy were impressed by her kindness and compassion for others.
Kathy was guided in life by her strong Catholic faith and love of her family. She is survived by her husband Pablo Diaz-Esquivel, M.D., daughter Elizabeth DiazTimberlake and her husband Charlie Timberlake of Atlanta, GA, and her cousins Mary Evelyn & Robert Hopkins of Pittsburgh, PA, and Paula & Joseph Yost of Silver Spring, MD. Kathy was predeceased by her parents Lucy Thornton Lynch and Thomas Francis Lynch of Miami, FL.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Amarillo, Texas on Saturday, May 20th at 11:00am.
