Kay Janelle Hungate

February 22, 1937 — March 13, 2019

Kay Janelle Hungate, 82, of Amarillo went to be with her precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 13, 2019.

Visitation will be held from 6-7:00 p.m., Friday, March 15, 2019 at Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Kay was born February 22, 1937 on a farm south of Miami, TX. She was the daughter of Charley B. and Allene Coffee Russell. She attended Miami public schools through the seventh grade. Her family then moved to a farm in Armstrong County south of Claude, TX where she attended Claude public schools graduating in 1955 as Salutatorian of her Senior Class. She then attended West Texas State University majoring in Education. At WT she became a life member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Alpha Chi National Honor Society, Who’s Who in American College and Universities, and Buffalo Gals. She graduated with honors in 1959 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree and in 1962 with a Master of Education Degree.

Kay married Larry Lynn Hungate of Canyon on December 28, 1958 at First Methodist Church in Claude. Larry and Kay attended Polk Street United Methodist Church and St. Stephens United Methodist Church in Amarillo until May of 1980 when they joined San Jacinto Baptist Church which is now the Church at Quail Creek. She was a member there for thirty four years. Kay joined the Church at Bushland on February 14, 2016. She and Larry were very active members of each church.

Kay was a teacher for Amarillo ISD for 30 years retiring in May of 1994. She taught at several schools but taught twenty two years at Lee Bivins Elementary School. She was one of ten who established the first kindergarten program for Amarillo ISD. She also taught first, second, and third grades. Kay truly enjoyed her school children.

Kay, Larry and family loved to travel. They travelled to many places in the United States but their favorite place was the beautiful mountains of New Mexico. They enjoyed many wonderful times with family and friends at their mountain cabin. Kay’s favorite hobbies were reading and genealogy. She adored her family and wrote a family heritage book about them. She was a Diamond Life Member of the Texas Retired Teachers’ Association and was a past member of the DAR Llano Estacado Chapter. Kay participated in the Church at Quail Creek’s “Opry” for several years which brought a lot of laughs and joy to many people. She was also a member of the Widowed Persons Services.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 45 years, Larry Hungate.

Kay is survived by two daughters, Kristi K. Steelman of Farwell, TX and Lorri L. Bagwell and husband, Rev. David Bagwell of North Richland Hills, TX; four grandchildren who brought so much joy to her, Allison Kaye Bagwell Coon and husband Tom of Wichita Falls, TX, Scott Steelman of Hurst, TX, Ashley Marie Bagwell Painter and husband Tristen of Sulpher Springs, TX and Amber Lynn Bagwell of North Richland Hills, TX; sister, Norma C. Whitten and husband Earl F. of Bovina, TX; nephew, Dr. Bret Whitten and wife Sherri of Bovina, TX; great-niece, Chloee Whitten of Bovina, TX; great-nephew, Colby Whitten of Farwell, TX; and great-niece, Megan Whitten Taylor and husband Jared of Canyon, TX.
