Kay Beth McMinn

November 5, 1939 — October 29, 2016

Kay McMinn age 76 of Amarillo died October 29, 2016.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 2 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church.  Dr. Murray Gossett will officiate.  A private interment was held at Llano Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Kay’s story began on November 5, 1939 when she was born in Ft. Worth.  One wonders if her parents, Meredith and Rosemary Kendrick knew just how special she would be and how many lives she would touch.  Kay graduated from AHS in 1958 and got her start at Amarillo College.  She continued on, graduating from West Texas State University in 1970 with A BA degree.
Kay loved to travel and her favorite journey of all time began the day she met Dwayne McMinn.  The couple was married October 24, 1959.  From that day on the couple set their course for an incredible journey together.  They experienced joy at the births of their beautiful daughters, they experienced the challenges of being working parents, they celebrated milestones and graduations, and they clung to one another during difficult times and times of sorrow. Kay and Dwayne are the epitome of true love.
Being a stay at home mother was not in the cards for Kay, no she thought it very important to support the community and become an advocate for women.  She was an excellent example for her daughters and all young women, as she proved nothing was impossible or out of reach.   In her own words, Kay stated, “I am interested in advancing the cause of women in Texas, the US and around the world” and thus she did.  Kay began her career as a teacher in 1970 until 1981 at Austin Jr. High where she was also the English Department Head.  She served as the president of the 900 member Amarillo Classroom Teachers Association from 1980-1981 and also as a president of the Amarillo Educators Association.
In 1981 she decided to leave her teaching career and start a business of her own.  She became State Farm’s first woman agent in Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle.  In her own words she “started from scratch” and built it into a very successful and thriving business.  Kay knew by constant hard work and an emphasis on service she could make a difference not only in the insurance industry but in the community.   She continually strived to improve herself by challenging herself.  She was a member of the Amarillo Association of Life Underwriters and was a Life Underwriters Training Council Fellow, always staying abreast of changes in the insurance industry to better serve her clients.  Kay was also the winner of the George Morris Financial Service Professional of the Year in 2002.
Kay believed in volunteering and felt it not only benefitted the community but the individual.  She served as an officer or a board member in many community organizations including the Yellow Rose Pilot Club and League of Women Voters.  Kay served as past president for the local American Cancer Society, as past president of the Amarillo Area Association of Insurance Advisors; past president of the Amarillo Women’s Network and was a graduate of Leadership Amarillo.
Her successes and achievements were many however each of them paled when compared to the love and pride she had for her family.  She delighted in each of the girls accomplishments and her favorite place to be was on the arm of her beloved husband Dwayne.  Kay’s heart was filled with joy when surrounded by her family and close friends.  It was her undying love for her family that fueled her many successes and gave her comfort in the times of difficulty.  Family was everything to Kay.
The family invites you to join them in remembering and celebrating Kay’s life at a visitation on Tuesday evening at Schooler Funeral Home from 6 PM until 7 PM.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents and by one grandson, Austin B. Carter.
She is survived by her husband of fifty seven years, Dwayne; her three daughters, Kimberly K. McMinn, Molly Ann Brasher and husband Mike, Meredith Lynn Yarnold and husband Kelly; her sister Judy Judd and her husband Larrie of Trophy Club, TX; her brother, Jim Kendrick of Wichita Falls, TX; and six grandchildren, Chase and Chad Pate, Landon Carter, River and Rain Taylor and Lily Hochstein; and three great-grandchildren.
