Kenneth L. Goodman

Kenneth Goodman was born April 23, 1926 in McLean, TX.  He served in the US Navy during WWII from February 1, 1944 to April 18, 1946 on board the USS Oxford.

After discharge from the Navy he lived in California and McLean, TX for a few years before moving to Amarillo and joining the Amarillo Police Department on March 6, 1951.  Kenneth served with the Amarillo PD until his retirement on May 31, 1981. During his tenure with the Police Department Kenneth could be seen working security at many high school football games.  He also worked the Tri-State Fair for 20 plus years in many different positions.

Shortly after retirement Kenneth was diagnosed with malignant melanoma.  This diagnosis took him to MD Anderson in Houston.  At the time he was given a couple of years to live. Almost immediately he became involved with the HRDF Apartments.  These apartments allow MD Anderson patients to stay there free of charge for 3 months.  Kenneth and his wife Sue ended up managing these apartments for the next 16 years as volunteers. During this time he touched many lives helping residents with transportation and kind words of encouragement.

After leaving Houston he moved to Lufkin for 6 years where he volunteered with the VFW.

In 2005 Kenneth moved back to Amarillo and began to volunteer at the Amarillo Downtown Women's Shelter Thrift Store.  He did this until he was unable to due to physical constraints.

In 2014 Kenneth and Sue moved to the Claremont Apartments. That same year Sue passed away.

Kenneth is survived by his wife Delores; a sister Marjorie Fish of McLean, TX; a son Dennis Goodman and wife Cherita of Mansfield, TX; a daughter Debby Leggett-Brown and husband Raymond of Amarillo, TX; step children Curt Jones and wife Cindy of Truckee, CA;  Sharon Lee and husband Aubry of Nacogdoches, TX. Seven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
