Kenneth was born in Tucson, AZ, the son of Joseph Kenneth and Helen Shollenbarger.
He died peacefully in his sleep, at his home in Amarillo, at the age of 77. Kenneth attended school in Tucumcari and Logan, NM, and completed High School in Colorado Springs, CO. He was an outstanding high school athlete excelling in basketball. As an adult in Amarillo at the YMCA, he would surprise his much younger opponents with 3 pointers. Ken graduated at the top of his class in High School and College.
In 1954, while attending college at the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO he won the Engineering Alumni Award and Wall Street Journal Award. He was also a member of Associated Engineering Students, American Institute of Architects, (Junior Chapter), and the Council of Greek Students. He transferred to Abilene Christian College in Abilene, TX his junior year, and changed his degree to accounting. While at ACC he won the Inter-Social Club Council Scholarship Award, served as Treasurer to the Student Association, Secretary of Frater Sodalis, and was a member of the B.A. Club. It was at ACC that he met Marion Joyce Boone and married August 22, 1959 in Dallas, TX. To this marriage four children were born, Helen (Ron) Eller, Todd (Adina) Shollenbarger, Kimberley (Kim) Barickman, and Lora (Lloyd) Brown. Ken and Joyce later divorced in 2005.
Following college he attended Southern Methodist University School of Law, while working for a “Big 8 Firm” and becoming a CPA. He was awarded his Doctor of Jurisprudence May 1963 and, on September 17, 1963, received his law license. He was very proud to be honored with 50+ years of service from SMU. Ken also received his Certified Public Accountancy Certificate and in 2015 was awarded a distinguished member of the Texas Society of CPA’s for 50 years. His legal career involved various practice areas, but he specialized in Taxation, Estate Planning, Wills, Trusts and Probate. He was believed to be among the first tax law specialists in Texas.
Kenneth was blessed with six grandchildren: Jessica and Jared Eller, Casey and Kolby Burkhardt, Bailey Brown, and Harlie Barickman (deceased). Ken is also survived by, brother Joseph (Jan) Shollenbarger, and three nephews, Randy, Scott and Keith. The family would like to give special thanks to Almalinda Lawrence, his secretary, who was a loyal, caring friend and employee.
Ken and his family enjoyed annual ski trips, camping and fishing and he loved learning of the history of his mother and father’s families, as immigrants to America, in the 1700’s. Kenneth has led a rich and full life full of spiritual service to his Lord and Savior through bible studies and service as a bible class teacher and deacon at Central Church of Christ. Ken is now reunited with his parents, granddaughter, and ancestors, with the Lord. The family honored Ken’s wish to be cremated and now welcomes you to a memorial service that will be held February 6, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Central Church of Christ, 1401 S. Monroe St., Amarillo, TX, in the chapel, with a private family burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 14200 I-27, Amarillo, TX, to follow.
