Koma Beryl Mahler Fields,91, of Claude, died Saturday, October 1st, 2011.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, in First Baptist Church of Claude with Rev. Dick Gravley officiating along with Rev. Charles Davenport. Graveside services will follow. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., Amarillo.
Koma Beryl was welcomed into heaven by the Lord at her home in Claude on October 1st. She was born October 24th, 1919, in Vernon, Texas, to G.A. (Jack) Mahler, Sr. and wife Ethel. She had one older brother , G.A. , Jr. All preceded her in death. She grew up during the Depression Era on the family farm outside Claude. She joyfully recalled horseback riding and school days with friends. She accepted Christ Jesus as her Savior at age 11 at First Baptist in Claude. This church has remained her home church all these years.
Koma Beryl graduated from Claude High School in 1936 and followed her big brother to Hardin- Simmons University in Abilene. She was active in numerous school and college organizations and activities. She was especially honored to be a Cowgirl at HSU for four years.
Upon graduation in 1940, Koma Beryl became the junior high reading and speech teacher at Phillips Public Schools. There she met the love of her life, Henry F. Fields, a high school coach and industrial arts teacher in the Phillips schools. World War II intervened but their bond only deepened while Henry served as an Army officer. They were married on February 27, 1943 at Ft. Meade, Maryland. Koma Beryl continued to teach school while Henry served overseas during the war years.
After the war, the couple settled in Claude and began farming and ranching. Koma Beryl taught school until their children were born. They were active together in their church, the school and the community for many happy years. Koma Beryl was a founding member of the Armstrong County Museum Board of Directors and served as the first Art Gallery Chairman. She also enjoyed her service on the Hardin-Simmons University Board of Trustees. Over the years, she was active in the Unity Study Club of Claude and served on various committees and capacities at her church and the school.
Koma Beryl and Henry created or contributed to several scholarship funds both at First Baptist of Claude and at Hardin-Simmons University. They always sought various ways to help those who needed it most.
Koma Beryl Fields was preceded to heaven by her husband, Henry. They had a blessed marriage for almost 63 years. She is survived by family and friends who love her deeply. She valued each and everyone of them as well. She was devoted to her two children and seven grandchildren and enjoyed 13 great-grandchildren. Her daughter is Kay Fields Henard and husband Joe of Lake Tanglewood, Amarillo. Her son is Jack Douglas Fields and wife Shelley of Claude. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren lovingly called her "Mommuver." They are Evan Henard of Canyon, NiKay Henard Webb and husband John of Houston, Nancy Fields of Waitsfield, Vermont, Lindsey Fields Slack and husband Ryan of Amarillo, Karli Fields of Amarillo, Matt Cox and wife Melissa of Amarillo, and Ben Cox and wife Suzanne of Amarillo. Great-grandchildren include Drew, Emma and Ella Henard; Kaylee Smith, Gabriella Webb, Holly and Aaron Webb; Thomas Henry Slack; Kenah and Koy Cox; Cayden, Ryan and Benson Cox.
The family wishes to express special appreciation and genuine love for Koma Beryl’s devoted caregiver of over five years, Syndy Box. She and Irene Flores and family became valued members of Koma Beryl’s extended family in these final years .
The family suggests memorials be to the First Baptist Church of Claude and/or its Scholarship Fund, the Armstrong County Museum, Hardin-Simmons University Scholarships, or the Mellody Harris Trust 2011 at Wells Fargo Bank of Tulia.
A visitation for all friends and family will be held on Monday, Oct. 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Schooler Armstrong Chapel on the square in Claude.
