LaVoyda Jean Kimbell Hill, 79, of Amarillo passed away June 14, 2016 and is now rejoicing in the heavenly arms of God. Following a private interment at Llano Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 17, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo with Reverends Jeremy Boothby and Murray Gossett officiating.
LaVoyda was born on June 23, 1936 in Roswell, New Mexico to Rudy and Audrey Kimbell. The family moved to Amarillo shortly after LaVoyda was born and she would go on to call Amarillo home for the rest of her life. While attending Amarillo High School, she met and fell in love with Gene Hill, a remarkable man with whom she would spend 62 years laughing, loving, and raising four children.
She was a woman whose personality and love for the Lord was truly contagious. She lit up a room with her smile, even until the end. She found so much comfort and happiness in the devotion and love from her husband Gene. They held onto many sweet and silly moments, with Gene stealing kisses or sneaking smooches on her cheek to make her beam. To be around the two of them was to completely feel the power of love and the understanding that marriage vows are meant to be kept sacred. They demonstrated that above all else true love can conquer everything.
LaVoyda’s humor and zest for life was felt by all her family and friends. But she held her eleven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter in a very special place in her heart. They adored their Nana and the love and laughter she brought into their lives. From backyard family baseball, painting lessons, elaborate cardboard box forts, every after school adventure and trip to Gene Acres are all cherished by the entire family.
LaVoyda was a talented artist and gardener whose green thumb was envied by many. Her flower gardens still stand as a great reminder of this. Her beautiful paintings are surely evidence of her love and deep appreciation for God’s creation and nature. Her calling was not just in her amazing abilities with a paintbrush, her travels, her countless hours of volunteer work in the community or any of the other things that we could list. Her true calling was her gift to make all those who knew her feel the love of the Lord. She radiated a kindness and joy that made others want to be around her. She is truly irreplaceable and we will carry her legacy of love with us.
She was preceded in death by her parents Rudy and Audrey Kimbell, and her brother Dr. Larry Kimbell.
She is survived by her husband Gene G. Hill, son Kirk Hill and wife Trisha, three daughters; Kathy Rice and husband Kerry, Karla Coon and husband Richard, Alice Homen and husband Louis; all of Amarillo. Her grandchildren Kalin Hill Nugent and husband Ryan, Kole Hill, Austin Cantwell, Gunnar Cantwell, Joseph Rice, Noah Rice, Bailey Coon Lloyd and husband Nick, Brice Coon, Chelsea Homen, Meredith Homen, Levi Homen, and great-granddaughter Molly Lloyd, sister-in-law Shearer Kimbell of Amarillo, and brother-in-law Don Hill and wife Alice of Connecticut.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to special friend and caretaker Amy Lomas.
We would also like to thank Gene and LaVoyda’s fellow church members at Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church, as well as countless other family and friends who prayed, supported and loved LaVoyda throughout her life.
