Leocadio Parra Velasquez

November 27, 1928 — October 23, 2015

Leo Velasquez, 86, of Amarillo passed away peacefully on Friday, October 23, 2015.
He was born November 27, 1928, in Canadian, to Pedro B. and Florencia P. Velasquez. Graduating in 1946, Leo served his country in the Army during the Korean crisis. He attended the Catholic Church and was a member of the American Legion. Leo committed his life to his career for 43 years with the Santa Fe Railroad serving as a transportation clerk, before retiring on June 30, 1989. In 1994, he married Phyllis C. Finney in Placerville, California.
Leo dearly loved his family and his home. He spent his greatest years working on various projects around his home inside and out. Leo finished every project he started and his family knew there was nothing he couldn’t fix. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand to a friend, neighbor or complete stranger. His infectious smile and positive attitude filled the room anytime he was surrounded by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Leo not only loved spending time with his family at home, he also enjoyed traveling to Illinois to visit his wife’s family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Florencia Velasquez; and two brothers, Reymundo and Joaquin Velasquez.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; six children, David Velasquez (Amarillo), Sylvia Velasquez (Lebanon, MO), Ricardo Velasquez (Hobbs, NM), Rosita Harwell (Arlington), Philip Velasquez (San Diego) and Teresa Moore (Step Daughter – Amarillo); four brothers, Eufemio Velasquez (Amarillo), Jesus Velasquez (Olathe, KS), Aurelio Velasquez (Amarillo), Michael Velasquez (Amarillo); four sisters, Florence Kimbley (Pampa), Henrietta Yates (Pampa), Reynalda Salazar (New Mexico) and Susan Totem (Pampa); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Tuesday at 1PM at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. in Amarillo.
Graveside services will be Tuesday at 4PM at Fairview Cemetery in Pampa.
