Letha Sheets Golden Banks, 74, of Amarillo died Tuesday, April 22, 2014.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jo Roberts Mann officiating. Private family burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Letha was born Oct. 27, 1939, in Dalhart. Letha was one of 11 children born to Eldred and Nellie Sheets. She was the eighth born child of 11, and the youngest girl.
The family moved to Canyon, where Letha was raised and graduated from Canyon High School in 1957. She attended West Texas State University, where she received a bachelors degree in education, then later returned for a masters degree in school administration.
Letha first worked for Amarillo public schools as a special education teacher then as a supervisor for special education.
Later, she became director of special services for Canyon schools, and then the director for Children’s Rehabilitation Center in Amarillo. Letha was known for being a strong advocate for the underdog.
Letha was an active member of the community who graciously volunteered her time and served on numerous boards for many organizations and activities.
She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Amarillo.
After retirement, Letha’s passion became traveling and ballroom dancing. She loved to get dolled-up and put on her dancing shoes.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Mike Golden; her husband of 30 years, Don Golden; her husband and dance partner, Max Banks; her brothers, Don and Shirley Sheets; and a baby brother, Joe Roy.
Her presence in our lives was a blessing beyond words and we will deeply miss our beautiful, kind hearted, generous fun loving mom, Mimi, sister, and friend. Letha lived her whole life with style and grace and loved everyone she knew.
Survivors include her children, Steve Golden, Cindy Carter and husband Landon, Brandy Turner and husband Wes, Sundance Banks and wife Claudia and Cindy Munson; her grandchildren, Emily Golden, Michael Golden, Rob Carter, Sara Carter and Adelyn Banks; her great-grandchildren, Mia, Ava, Major and Averie; her brothers, Wiley Sheets, Jess Sheets and Jody Sheets; her sisters, Wilma Cornette and husband Marvin, Wanda Clemmer and husband Buford, Grace Bright and husband Gerald and Peggy Woods; her sister of the heart, Frannie Kaluznick; her special companion and dance partner, Frank Page; and many, many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Ronald McDonald House, 1501 Streit Drive, Amarillo, TX 79106; or St. Andrew’s Columbarium Fund, 1601 S. Georgia St., Amarillo, TX 79102.
