Linda Judith (Mahan) Hurley

February 6, 1941 — May 1, 2022

Amarillo, Texas

Linda Judith Mahan Hurley, 81, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on May 1, 2022.

“Judy” was born in Birmingham, Alabama on February 6, 1941, to William Hobson Mahan and Betty Cooper Mahan. She grew up in the Huntsville area and graduated from Huntsville High School in 1958. She attended Alabama College, later known as the University of Montevallo, and transferred to the University of Alabama, where she graduated in 1962. She married Jamie W. Hurley on December 15, 1962.

Judy lived in several places with her husband; Florida was her favorite. She lived in Memphis and Germantown, Tennessee, for a number of years, and worked for the Memphis public library system. In 2000, she earned her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Tennessee. After that, she got to enjoy her dream career as a librarian until she retired in 2014, when she moved to Amarillo, Texas to be with her grandchildren.

Judy and her husband Jim enjoyed sailboat racing with the Pickwick Sailing and Cruising Association. After Jim’s death, she continued to race her 37-foot sailboat “Glory!” for a number of years with the help of friends. She also enjoyed participating in Bible studies. She was a member of First Evangelical Church in Memphis, Tennessee.

She might have never imagined living in the high plains of Texas, but in the last years of her life she did just that and became “JJ”, the beloved grandmother of two who cared for them frequently. Her Texas family has greatly enjoyed getting to spend those years with her and make memories. She is remembered as a sweet lady who gave her time and effort to her family, and always had kind words for everyone.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Dan Mahan, and her husband, Jim Hurley.

Left on earth to cherish her memory are her brothers, Bill, Joe, and Jim Mahan, her daughter Jennifer Rabson and son-in-law David Geoffrey Rabson, and her grandchildren William and Linda Rabson.

Services will be held in Alabama.
