Lorene Spurlock, 93, of Spurlock Community near Stratford, Texas, diedWednesday, January 26, 2011.Funeral Service will be held 10:00 A. M. Saturday January 29, 2011, in Brentwood Chapel, Schooler Funeral Home, with Rev. Mark Metzger with First United Methodist Church of Perryton, Texas, officiating. Burial will be 3:00 P.M. in Stratford Cemetery, Stratford, Texas, with Rev. David Terry of United Methodist of Stratford, Texas, officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home 4100 S. Georgia St.Lorene was born in Amarillo on November 14, 1917, to Dorris and Arthur Folsom.Her father was a shepherd east of Amarillo when she was a young girl. The familymoved to Sherman County to farm near the Spurlock Community and she attendedSchool in Stratford. Lorene married Travis Spurlock January 3, 1937, in Stratford. They built theirhome in the Spurlock Community where they lived 68 years. Early in theirmarriage Lorene raised and sold turkeys, eggs and cream to help with the familyincome. She enjoyed growing flowers and beautiful green grass. She raised alarge vegetable garden yearly yielding food for summer and supplied the familywith food through the winter after canning and freezing the produce. She madethe best light bread, biscuits, cobblers, and fried chicken that you could ever wantto put in your mouth.After raising her three children, she took up china painting, oil painting, piecingand quilting quilts, crocheting afghans and sewing for missions.Lorene was a member of the Methodist Spurlock Chapel. She belonged to UnitedMethodist Women for whom she sewed hundreds of children's garments for themissions in Central America.The family expresses their sincere appreciation for the devoted love and caretheir mother received while living five years in the Village at Ware Memorial CareCenter. She felt the love of her caretakers and she loved them. Lorene became aprayer warrior for those who cared for her.She was preceded in death by her husband, Travis, December 6, 2005; and grandson, Barton Spurlock. Survivors include her children Jean Spurlock of Ruidoso, NM, James Spurlock andwife, Linda, of Stratford, Elaine Jordan and husband, Max, of Amarillo; twograndchildren, Brent Spurlock and wife, Laurie, of Stratford; Mary Beth Tallantand husband, Paul, of Lavon, TX; four great-grandchildren, Mary Ann and RussellSpurlock and Makenna and Reid Tallant; four step grandsons, Mike, Clay, Kent,and Jack Jordan.The family suggests memorials be to First United Methodist Church, 520 NorthMain, Stratford, TX, for mission support in Central America.
