Louis Hubert (Mac) McCurry, 87, of Amarillo died February 26, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 4, 2013, in Brentwood Chapel at Schooler Funeral Home. The Rev. Kevin Deckard of Polk Street United Methodist Church will officiate. Private family burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
He was born July 18, 1925 in Altus, Oklahoma to Ivy B McAlexander McCurry and William Hubert McCurry. Mac grew up in Altus, graduating from Altus High School and attending Altus Jr. College and Amarillo Jr. College. He was a 1953 graduate of Kansas State University with a B.S in Architectural Engineering.
Mac was an active participant in his profession and in the community. He was a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. He was a life time member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, serving as section president and state director and a charter member of the Structural Engineers Institute. He was also a life time member of the American Railway Engineers Association which he served as chairman of the Waterways and Harbors committee. He was a registered fallout analyst and listed in the Who’s Who in the South and Southwest. He was an active participant in the Amarillo community serving throughout his life as membership chairman for the Amarillo J.C.s, committee member for the local Cub Scouts, a unit leader for United Way, board member of Santa Fe Credit Union, and past president of the Santa Fe Bowling League and Santa Fe Golf League. Mac retired in 1983 after 39 years of service with the Santa Fe Railroad. At the time of his retirement he was Assistant Office Engineer of the Western Lines here in Amarillo. He was a proud member of the Kansas State Alumni Association and a past member of the IOOF Lodge in Wellington, Kansas. Mac was a member of Polk Street Methodist church where he had served as a church usher for many years.
He married Martha Louis Blunck in Wellington, Kansas on May 31, 1947. They came as bride and groom of one week to Amarillo to make their home in 1947. In May of 2012, Martha and Mac celebrated 65 wonderful years together. After his retirement, Mac and Martha enjoyed taking tours and traveling and most of all, working on their family genealogy. Mac’s favorite hobby was playing golf and being with his friends of many years.
Survivors include his wife Martha McCurry of the home; two children- Gregory L. and wife Melanie of Mississippi, and Crystal Roop and husband Donald of Amarillo; three grandchildren Dustin Roop of Amarillo, Lisa Roop of Amarillo, and Stephanie Friend of Mississippi; and five great grandchildren.
