Loyce “Aileen” Cassell Aureli, longtime Amarillo resident, died Friday evening, July 15, 2016 in Amarillo.
A vigil will begin at 7 pm Tuesday, July 26, at Calvary Hill Chapel, 3235 Lombardy Lane, Dallas, TX to give family and friends an opportunity to share remembrances and pray the rosary led by Father Peter Hopkins, LC. A Memorial Mass celebrated by Father Hopkins will be held at 11 am Wednesday, July 27, at Calvary Hill Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted at the Detroit TX Cemetery on Thursday, July 28, at 11 am. Local arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., Amarillo, TX.
Aileen was born December 9, 1930 in Detroit, TX. Her mother was Russie “Evalyn” Futrell Cassell and her father was Riley Emery Cassell. Aileen had one sister Dorothy Ann Cassell Page. Aileen graduated from Detroit High School in 1947 and graduated from Paris Junior College in 1949. Shortly after graduation, she married Leo Amerigo Aureli, a young jewelry student at PJC. They lived in the college apartments for a short time and moved to Dallas, TX where Leo secured employment with Zale’s Jewelers in the Oak Cliff-Dallas store. Aileen worked for Northwestern Mutual Fire Association in the insurance business. She became an Inland-Marine Underwriter during her three years with them. When their first child was born, she retired from the insurance business and began her lifelong pursuit of building a home for her husband and their five children.
She spent most of her time caring for her home, her husband and her children. As the children grew, she became involved in their many activities. She was very active in their school activities and in Girl Scouting. She was a Girl Scout leader and troop organizer at St Mary’s Elementary School. Furthermore, she served in leadership capacities on a city-wide level. When St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church was formed in southwest Amarillo, Aileen organized and directed the first CCD programs for the new congregation, as well as teaching some classes. Other volunteer endeavors included fundraising and various activities for the Capuchin Spiritual Alliance of The Monastery of Amarillo. Aileen had a strong passion for serving others.
Aileen supported her husband Leo as he pursued his career in the jewelry business. The family lived in Dallas, TX, Amarillo, TX, Farmington, NM, Corpus Christi, TX, Lansing, MI and Houston, TX. After Leo retired from Zale’s, Aileen encouraged him as he opened his own jewelry store, Leo Aureli & Son Creative Jewelers.
Leo and Aileen were married for 64 years before he passed away on October 28, 2013. Survivors include her five children Angie Aureli Schweer and her husband Roland of Katy, Josie Aureli Baker and her husband Henry of Dallas, Lainie Aureli Snider and her husband Frank of Bentonville, AR, Leo A. Aureli Jr and his wife Tamme of Amarillo and Terri Aureli Mathiasmeier and her husband Mark of Overland Park, KS. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren: Cynthia Schweer Rayner and her husband Christopher of Cape Town, South Africa, Erica Schweer Whalen and her husband Evan of Millburn, NJ, Julie Schweer Wilhite and her husband Christopher of Austin, Audra Baker Kubelka and her husband Dominic of Austin, Virginia Baker Wills and her husband D’Arcy of Irving, Ann Baker Bush and her husband Zach of Dallas, Preston Snider and his wife Sarah Rose of Buhler, KS, Grant Snider of Amarillo, Sarah Snider of Amarillo, Rebecca Snider and Lauren Snider, both of Bentonville, AR, Sloane Aureli of Washington, DC, Joshua Mathiasmeier and his wife Jamie of Olathe, KS, and Maegan Mathiasmeier of Lenexa, KS. She was also blessed with 17 great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters and one more great-grandson on the way.
She is also survived by her beloved sister-in-law Mary Ross of Dallas, her brother-in-law Amerigo Michael “Ace” Evangelist Jr and his wife Barbara of Houston, her sister-in-law Josephine Aureli of Amarillo and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and sister Dorothy.
Special thanks to her many caregivers at The Harrington and Ware Living Center. Our family is so grateful for your professional and loving care of our mother. Also we appreciate the beautiful care that she received at Childers Place during her final days.
