Lula Vastine LeGrand Nichols, 90, of Amarillo, TX died on January 10, 2014.
Services will be held on Thursday, January 16th at 2 pm at Paramount Baptist Church, River Road Campus with Pastor Micah Meurer officiating. Burial will be at Palo Duro Cemetery in Wildorado. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Lula Vastine LeGrand Nichols, 90, of Amarillo passed away at home on January 10, 2014. Lula was born to James and Nobie LeGrand on July 26, 1923 in Hereford. She was one of seven children. Raised in Bushland, Lula developed her spunk that she kept until her last moments on Earth.
Lula married, Cooter Young in 1943 and had two children, Betty Carroll and George William "G.W.". After five years of marriage, Cooter was killed in a trucking accident. Lula later remarried, Doyle Richard (D.R.) “Nick” Nichols, who adopted Betty Carroll and G.W., and then together had two more sons, Jimmy Doyle Nichols and Michael Newman Nichols. The Nichols family resided in River Road for over fifty years.
Lula worked as an LVN in the Emergency Room and later for Dr. Baay in Amarillo. Lula often reminisced about her love of providing care for those sick and wounded. She loved to tell a good story and she had so many to share with anyone who would listen.
In her 90 years, she made many good friends and was a faithful and long-time member of River Road Baptist Church, volunteering in their Benevolence, Ladies and Seniors programs. Lula spent much of her time with her close friends, playing Skip Bo, and solving all the world’s problems over a pot of coffee.
Lula was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Cooter in 1948 and her second husband, D.R. “Nick” Nichols in 1984, her daughter, Betty Carroll in 2006, her siblings, and her granddaughter, Jarene Nichols Richards.
Survivors include her sons, G.W. Nichols of Amarillo, Jimmy Nichols and wife Terri of Amarillo, and Mike Nichols and wife Gina of Burleson. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Georgia Dondglinger of Happy, Mikey Estrada of Amarillo, Jeremy Nichols of Chicago, IL, Juliana Nichols of Chicago, IL, Jessica Nichols of Euless, and Magic John Michael Nichols of Amarillo, Jadon and Jaci Nichols of Amarillo. Lula had nine great-grandchildren, Jenifer Preece of San Antonio, Faith Ann Wilson-Christopher of Happy, Zac Dondlinger of Amarillo, Isaac Dondligner of Amarillo, Guy Graves, Joshua Graves, and Dylan Graves of Happy, Hevan Richards, U.S. Navy, Nick Richards and Chy Mahana. She had three great great-grandchildren, Roman Dondlinger, MaKaya Dondlinger, and Clinton Briscoe, with one on the way.
Family will be receiving visitors on Wednesday from 6-7 P.M. at the funeral home.
