Margie Maxine Neel Ledbetter was born on December 29, 1923, in Mulkeytown, Illinois. She lived in Christopher, Illinois during the school year where she attended a one-room school house with her father as her teacher. During the summer months, the family lived on their farm in Broughton, Illinois. Eventually, they moved to the farm where they lived year-round. Margie then attended and graduated from McLeansboro Township High School in 1942. The night of their senior prom, she and the love of her life, Dossett Melvin Ledbetter, eloped and only the couple who went with them knew for the two weeks prior to graduation. They then moved to Chicago until her husband joined the Air Force during World War II. They lived in several cities before being transferred to Amarillo Air Force Base. They liked Amarillo so much, they stayed after he was discharged. Margie worked at The Mayfair Department Store until they adopted their daughter, Melody. Then she became a stay-at-home Mom.
Margie opened a day care and worked out of her house for about 15 years. She retired in 1985 to take care of her granddaughter, Kyndel, whom she thought the sun rose and set in. She was a major influence on Kyndel and has left her with many wonderful memories.
Margie and Doss were longtime members of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church and eventually San Jacinto Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Doss Ledbetter of Amarillo; mother, Murl Dwight of Amarillo; her father, Shirley Neel, of Broughton, Illinois, and a brother, Valjean Neel of Amarillo.
Margie is survived by her daughter, Melody Lee and husband, Mike of Waco; her precious granddaughter, Kyndel Mae Lee of Amarillo; nieces Sherri Evans of Montrose, CO and Lesa Lemke of Plano; and cousins, Joe, June, and Cliff Acord of Carmie, Illinois.
The family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1400 Wallace Boulevard, Amarillo, Texas.
