The family will receive guests Wednesday, October 2, 2024 from 6 to 7 PM at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia. The funeral will be on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 10 AM at Schooler Funeral Home in the Brentwood Chapel. A graveside service will follow at 3 PM at the cemetery in Chillicothe, TX. Lacey Bennett to officiate the services.
Marie was born in Vernon, TX on November 28, 1940 to her parents, L.V. and Gay Walker Evans. She attended Chillicothe High School. On July 12, 1957, she married her best friend and the love of her life, Robert Wayne Bennett, at Farmers Valley Methodist Church.Shortly after the start of their marriage, Wayne and Marie moved to Tribune, KS where they welcomed daughter Robyn and son Evan. In 1963, they moved to Amarillo, TX and soon welcomed their third child, Cindy.
Marie was a member of the Kingswood United Methodist Church. As the children were growing up, she spent her time volunteering for the South Georgia Elementary PTA, The Boy and Girl Scouts of America, Tarantella, Cotillion and the Kingswood Youth Group.
As her children grew older, she worked in retail sales, eventually running office operations as Vice President of the family business at Bennett Sample Pumps.
Marie was an avid reader and crafter. She was a collector of Longaberger Baskets, Precious Moments, fabric, shoes and most importantly, people. She found community through her involvement in the Precious Moments Club and Sew Buddies quilting group. Marie was a seasoned genealogist, curiously researching the family’s lineage, tracking down relatives and documenting her findings for others.
Marie had a special gift and passion for sewing and creating beautiful fabric designs. She spent much of her time creating beautiful quilts for her family to mark a graduation, a marriage or birth of a grandchild, which are lasting reminders of her love.
She was known by her grandchildren as Grammie, aka “Grammie Claus” for her over-the-top Christmases with her perfectly wrapped packages, snickerdoodle cookies and hand made stockings. Summers with her grandchildren were filled with crafts, imagination, trips to the family’s horse farm, and the best bologna sandwiches in the Texas Panhandle. The family also enjoyed many trips to the mountains in Red River, NM, which became a yearly tradition.
Marie’s friends and family will miss her warm laugh, hugs and strong sense of humor. Her story-telling and ability to find levity in almost any situation always lifted spirits. Her sage advice was typically spot-on, but her ability to simply sit with someone through a storm was powerful. To her family, Marie had a sixth sense to check in when it was most needed, offering an ear to listen and a farewell “I love you, Darlin.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, L.V. and Gay Evans, her sister, Elaine Bennett, her brothers, Jack and Jim Evans, and brothers-in-law Donald and Roger Bennett.
Marie is survived by her beloved husband of sixty-seven years, Robert; her children, Robyn Gaston and her husband Buddy, Evan Bennett and his wife Angela and Cindy Larson and her husband Tim; her grandchildren, Sam Carter and his wife Kayla, Robert Skelton, Chelsea Schnell and her husband Tyler, Hannah Larson, Joseph Larson and his wife Dallas, Leslie Ashlock and her husband Ben, and Doran Gaston; her great-grandchildren, Colton Carter, Kesleigh Carter, Blake Schnell, Logan Schnell, Drew Ashlock, Kate Ashlock and Graysen Bacon; brother-in-law Kent Bennett, sisters-in law Judy and Priscilla Bennett and many loving nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made in her honor to the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains or the Chillicothe Ex Students c/o Scholarship Fund (P.O. Box 634 Chillicothe, TX 79225).
