Mary Elizabeth Archer

July 3, 1955 — September 11, 2009

Elizabeth leaves behind a large and loving family who all believe that she was an amazing, excellent human being, and that her death is going to leave an enormous and unfillable void in their lives. She was the best mother, daughter, sister, physician, friend and confidante as well as much, much more. Elizabeth's greatest passion was her family, but her definition of family grew with time and life experience. Elizabeth is adored by her extensive family, loved by her friends, and admired by her patients. She was sad that illness deprived her of the privilege of practicing dermatology. As her many patients and colleagues know, she was not only an astute dermatologist but also compassionate.
Dr. Elizabeth Archer was born July 3, 1955, and raised in Amarillo. A 1973 graduate of Tascosa High School, she received an A.S. from Amarillo College in 1975. In 1977, she graduated from The University of Texas in Austin with a B.S. in zoology then received her M.D. from The University of Texas Medical Branch in 1981 in Galveston. Shortly after graduating from medical school, she married her fellow classmate, Dr. John Andrew. After an internship at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, she completed a dermatology residency at UTMB in 1985, where she was chief resident. In 1987, Dr. Archer moved with her husband and two young daughters to Amarillo, where she opened her private practice. She was an active member of the Texas Medical Association, the Potter-Randall County Medical Society, Texas Dermatological Society and a fellow of The American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Archer was a generous donor to many philanthropic causes, and she was especially thankful for the early education she received through Amarillo Independent School District and Amarillo College.
Elizabeth devoted herself to her family, especially her treasured daughters. She was generous to a fault, always concerned for the welfare of others. Elizabeth lived her life to its fullest, traveling around the world with her family and teaching her daughters skills ranging from search and rescue scuba diving to nature photography to gourmet cooking. She was an avid spectator on the sidelines for high school tennis and provided constant encouragement throughout the difficulties of everyday life.
Survivors include her beloved husband, John Andrew, M.D.; her cherished daughters, Ruthie Andrew Grant and husband Miles and Rachel Andrew. She also is survived by her devoted parents, Ruth and Dr. Richard Archer. Other survivors include her seven siblings, Emily Archer, M.D., Evelyn Archer, M.D., Branch Archer, M.D., Eileen Allison, Estelle Archer, M.D., Rebecca McCarthy, M.D., and Richard Archer Jr., M.D.; in addition to 32 adoring nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, Elizabeth requested contributions be to the Amarillo College Scholarship Fund established in her name.
At her request, there will not be a public memorial service. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
