Helen was born on Thanksgiving Day in Twitty, Texas, a small farming community near Shamrock. She lived in Shamrock her entire childhood. Helen was a lifetime resident of Texas making Amarillo and Austin her home where she touched many lives through her church and professional career. She was a true friend to many people and will be missed. She will always be remembered for her caring and giving nature, sense of humor and love and pride in her children. She often said, “She loved to work”. Helen was a stay at home mom and homemaker until her children entered school. After twenty four years, she retired from State employment in 1996 at which time she became a Realtor with Coldwell Banker in Amarillo. Helen enjoyed her work and the friends made through both jobs.
Helen was a Christian and loved the Lord. She was a member of the Baptist Church from age nine. Her family and friends can take comfort in knowing she is in a better place, at peace with the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her much loved parents, Charles V. and Ola Mae Daughtry; her only sister and friend, Wanda Jean Daughtry McMillan; and very close niece, Terri Jean McMillan.
Helen is survived by her children, Jeffrey “Jeff” K. Smith and wife Brenda, Shelly Smith Cook and husband Michael; two granddaughters, Taylor Michelle Cook and husband James Seppi, and Maj. Jordan Kathleen Miller and husband Adam; great-grandaughter, Scout Miller; great-grandson, Finn Michael Miller; niece, Sherri McMillan Broyles and husband Rick; brother in law, Earnest McMillan; former husband and friend, Don Asher; and members at First Baptist Church Amarillo.
Helen worked for many years at Coldwell Banker and First Equity in Amarillo. Her co-workers and clients were very important to her.
