Mary Lou Hendricks Hathcock of Amarillo died Tuesday, May 15, 2012. A private family interment at Llano Cemetery will be held with Dr. Robert Beckley, a family friend for over 50 years, officiating the service. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Mrs. Hathcock was the last surviving member of one of the pioneer families that settled Tyler, Texas, in Smith County. The family hatchery business was situated on top of the highest “hill” in East Texas. The hatchery provided baby chickens to businesses in several states, including Tyson Foods. The family also had a cattle and hay business. Today, the family lands, which were given to Boys Ranch of Amarillo, overlook Interstate 20.
Mary Lou graduated from Tyler High School and Tyler Business College with a degree in Business. She married R. S. Hathcock, also of Tyler in 1936. They moved to Houston and began an accounting corporation dealing with businesses along the Houston Ship Channel. The business was sold in 1977 after 40 years. The couple then moved to Amarillo. R. S. Hathcock died in 1979. She was also preceded in death by a special friend, L. O’Brien Thompson, in 2007.
Mrs. Hathcock was a life-long Baptist and Democrat. She was an active supporter of First Baptist Church of Amarillo, the Amarillo Botanical Gardens, the Amarillo Little Theatre, the Amarillo Children’s Home, the Amarillo College Foundation, and Opportunity School.
Mrs. Hathcock is survived by her son Reagan Hathcock and wife Judy of Amarillo; three grandsons, Darin Hathcock and wife Chris of Austin, Brent Hathcock and wife Suzanne of Cedar Hill, Alan Hathcock and wife Sarah of New Orleans; three great-grandsons, Mason Patrick Hathcock of Austin, Holden Jacob Hathcock and Ethan Matthew Hathcock of Cedar Hill; and two great-granddaughters, Norah Jayne Hathcock and Genevieve Rebecca Hathcock of New Orleans. She is also survived by two close friends, Mrs. Margaret Knott Patterson of Canyon and Mrs. Emily Glover of Austin.
The family will visit with friends at Schooler Funeral Home from 7-9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2012.
In lieu of food or flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to a favorite charity, especially those related to children.
