Mary Ellen Henslee Mager

Mary Ellen Henslee Mager, 93, of Amarillo, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018.

Rosary will be at 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel 4100 S. Georgia St. Funeral Mass will be at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church 4100 S. Coulter St. Celebrant will be Rev. John Valdez. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home 4100 S. Georgia St.

Mary was born in Comanche, Oklahoma on March 14, 1925 to Homer E. and Susan B. Henslee.  In her infancy, Hereford, Texas became her hometown. She attended West Texas University during World War II, receiving her B.S. Degree in English. She married George Mager in Hereford in 1951. Mary taught English and Speech at Hereford High School, Roosevelt Jr. High, Tulsa Oklahoma and Santa Fe, New Mexico High School. After the family made their home in Amarillo, Mary’s sons involved her in Boys Scouts and camping while her daughters involved her in making costumes for twirlers, high school musicals and competition plays. She became the costumer for Lone Star Ballet for many years of the Nutcracker. She also created costumes for AC-WTSU- “Texas”. She sewed costume for Divas of Amarillo Opera until after she was 80 years old. Mary was twice nominated for Golden Nail Award, once for L.S.B and once for Amarillo Opera. She received the Golden Needle Award from Amarillo Opera. She was a talented contributor to the Arts.

Mary was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church where she was a member of Alter Guild and longtime participant of Eucharistic Adoration.  She loved her God, her church and her family with all her being. She will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George L. Mager; a sister Betty Sue Fox; and two brothers, Donald D. Henslee and Homer E. Henslee, Jr.

Mary is survived by her sons, Jeff Mager and wife Eileen of Edmond, Oklahoma and Dr. Andy Mager of Amarillo; daughters, Teresa Gannaway and husband Dr. Mark E. Gannaway of Garland and Amy Neeb and husband Thomas of Carrollton; Eight Grandchildren, Adrienne, Cameron, Valerie, Emily, Christopher, Sarah, Morgan, and Bryce; four great-grandsons, Grant, Ethan, Mason and Caleb; two great-granddaughters, Hayden and Poet

The family suggests memorials be made to Evelyn Rivers Christmas Project 314 S. Jefferson St, Amarillo, TX 79101 or a favorite charity.
