Mary Lou Nisbet

Mary Lou Nisbet, 80, of San Angelo, died on Monday, July 31, 2017.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 5, 2017 at St. St. Stephen United Methodist Church, 4600 S Western, Amarillo, with Dr. Jim Smith officiating.  Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.

On July 31, 2017 Mary Lou Nisbet was very peacefully and quickly taken to be with Jesus. At 80 years old she began a brief battle with cancer, fought hard, and God decided that she was ready to rest. We will miss her terribly but know she’s laughing and dancing with Jesus. She was residing in San Angelo.

Mary Lou was born March 13, 1937 in Wichita, Kansas to Dorothy Mitchell and later adopted by Wallace Keahey when he married her mother. She was primarily raised in Panhandle, Texas. She graduated from Panhandle High School in 1955. She went to Northwest Texas School of Nursing to become a Registered Nurse. She later went to TCU to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She worked and taught nursing school at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, and then moved to Amarillo. While working for the health department, Mary Lou met Tommy Nisbet and they got married May 30, 1969. Mary Lou later went to work for Northwest Texas Healthcare System as an Emergency Room nurse. She was very passionate about nursing, and worked to achieve and maintain her Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Certified Emergency Nursing certifications. The family moved to San Antonio in 1988, and Mary Lou worked in the Emergency Room at North East Baptist Hospital. In 1992, they moved back to Amarillo then returned to work at NWTHS in the Emergency Room and later transitioned to the JO Wyatt Clinic before she retired. She maintained her nursing license since her retirement as she was very proud of her profession, and “just in case” she wanted to go back to work.

Mary Lou and Tommy had 2 children, Steve and Shelley. They were always very involved parents and had many good times as band parents at Amarillo High, also choirs at St. Stephen UMC in Amarillo and Coker UMC in San Antonio. Mary Lou had a big smile and warm nature, their home was always a welcome place for their children and their friends to congregate. They moved to San Angelo, Texas in February 2016.

Mary Lou loved music and was always involved, either in handbell choir, and later discovered her love for barbershop style music as well as participation for many years in the Sweet Adelines Palo Duro Metro Chorus.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her dad, Wallace Keahey, her mother Dorothy Keahey, her uncle Gene Kaup, and her brother Bob Keahey.

She is survived by her husband Tommy Nisbet, her son Steve Nisbet and wife Robbin of Buffalo, Minnesota, her daughter Shelley Harris and husband Ed of San Angelo, Texas, by grandkids Megan and Jacob Metz and Clinton and Christina Harris.   She is also survived by her sister Sheryl Blagg and husband Fred of Amarillo, Texas, nephews JD Williams and wife Shannon, Jeff Williams and wife Megan, Gary and Cheryl Keahey, Sheri and Jack Foster and Terri Nizza. of Oklahoma,   and several great nieces and nephews. Finally she is survived by her special best friend, Martha Moore of Odessa, Texas, and children who have always been more family than friends.

Memorials may be made to Children’s Miracle Network or the National MS Society.

The family will receive friends 4:00-5:00 pm Friday, August 4, 2017 at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S Georgia, Amarillo.
