Mary Jo Monroe, 80, of Amarillo died Sunday, February 19, 2017.
Vigil will be at 6 p.m. Thursday February 23, 2017 in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, February 24, 2017 in St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral with Monsignor Harold Waldow and Rev. Scott Raef as concelebrants. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Mary Jo Monroe was born Jan. 20, 1937, in Pocatello Idaho, to Leola Kluesner and Joseph T. Peters. Mary Jo graduated from WTAMU with a bachelor's degree in teaching.
Mary Jo was married to Allen Monroe December 28, 1964.
Mary Jo worked as a teacher initially but her true passion was Amarillo Agency for Women, where she worked tirelessly as executive director. She devoted her professional life to advocating for the unborn. She always went the extra mile for those in need, especially young mothers. She retired in February of 2017.
Mary Jo truly believed that every person was a child of God and every person should be treated as a child of God.
Mary Jo enjoyed her family, gardening and watching her grandchildren's activities and accomplishments.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral and lived a devoted spiritual life. She attended daily mass and was a minister of Holy Communion and participated in perpetual adoration and many volunteer ministries. She especially loved arranging the flowers that decorated the chapel.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Allen; one sister and one brother.
Survivors include three sons, John and Laura Monroe of Keene, N.Y., Joseph and Donna Monroe, James and Amy Monroe, all of Amarillo; three daughters, Ann Marie Monroe of Amarillo, Mary Margaret Monroe of Dallas and Michelle and Michael Gutierrez of Katy; and her grandchildren, Andrew, Matt, Bethany and Morgan Monroe, Anna and Emily Monroe and Reaghan and Sloane Gutierrez.
Mary Jo is also survived by her siblings: Frank and Mary Kay Peters; Fred Bubeck; Danny and Pam Peters; Gerri Peters; Mark and Linda Peters; Rick Peters; and Judy Swirczynski.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Amarillo Agency for Women, P.O. Box 31012, Amarillo, TX 79120 or St. Mary's Cathedral School.
