Max Brown

Max Lynn Brown, 76 of Amarillo died Sunday, March 15, 2015.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 18th at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church.  Dr. Howard K. Batson and Mr. Gene Shelburne will officiate.   Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Max was born July 12, 1938 in Ranger, Texas to his parents, James Lester and Myrle Marie Howell Brown.  He started school in Olden, Texas and graduated high school in Kilgore, Texas in 1956.  After high school, Max enrolled in Baylor University competing a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960.  He then attended Baptist Theological Seminary obtaining a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1963 and a Master of Divinity degree in 1968.  Howard Payne University awarded Max a Doctor of Divinity Degree in 1979.  Through the years, he served as pastor of Baptist churches in Wellborn, Ozona, Hamlin, Uvalde, Huntsville, Brownwood and Galveston.  He served on the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and served as Director of the Human Welfare Coordinating Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas during his pastoral years.  In July 1976, he served as chaplain for one day at the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, DC and opened the Congress with prayer.  He was a member of the Board of Trustees at Howard Payne University and received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree in 1977.  He was a member of the Board of Regents of Baylor University; President of the Southern Baptist Association of Ministries to the Aging; and President of Texas Alumni of South Western Baptist Theological Seminary.  He served as interim pastor of First Baptist Churches in Abilene, Plainview, Hereford, Happy, and Claude.  In 1993, Max served as Vice President of Development at High Plains Baptist Hospital.  When the hospital merged with St. Anthony’s Hospital, he became Director of the Baptist St. Anthony’s Foundation.  After retiring, Max served as a Chaplain of Interim Hospice of Amarillo.  It was a rewarding way for Max to complete his ministry years.  He was grateful for the compassionate care he received as a patient of Interim Hospice.  The entire staff helped prepare Max for the transition from this life.
Max was a compassionate, loving and caring man.  We thank God for the gift of Max’s life and the time spent with him.

Visitation will be from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm Tuesday, March 17th at Schooler Funeral Home.  The family suggests memorials be made to a favorite charity.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Diann Brown, a son and daughter-in-law, Les and Desi Brown of Richardson, a daughter, Aimee Brown of Amarillo, and seven grandchildren, Lara Catherine, Abbie, Paul, Luke, Joshua, Bella and Lillian, along with his wife’s children, Michael McNew of Arkansas, Susan and Steven Sigler of Lewisville, and Julie and Clint Clark of Flower Mound, and his wife’s eight grandchildren, a brother and sister-in-law, Grady and Carolyn Brown of Livingston, a brother, Jimmy Ray, who preceded him in death, and his first wife, Katy Brown of Amarillo.
