Melba Louise Newberry Wood, age 84, of Claude passed away Sunday, October 18, 2015, in Amarillo.
Services will be at First Baptist Church in Claude on Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Dick Gravley and Rev. Charles Davenport officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Melba was born the daughter of Leonard Stacy and Beulah May Newberry in Groom on December 3, 1930. She grew up in Goodnight. She graduated from Goodnight High School and went on to attend West Texas Teacher’s College.
Melba married her true love, Gerald Claude Wood, on October 4, 1952 in Kamay, Texas. Melba devotedly supported her husband’s military service which took her many places such as Wichita Falls, Amarillo, and Cape Cod. She and Gerald moved to Claude in 1963 and happily lived the remainder of their lives there. Melba’s true gift was serving others and would often do anything to help anyone she could.
Melba was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She enjoyed many activities with her sons and family including gardening, going to the mountains, sewing, painting, cooking, and working with children.
Melba was actively involved in the community of Claude, First Baptist Church of Claude, playing the piano at the Hudson House, and convalescent home, and in the lives of many people.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard Stacy and Beulah May Newberry; her husband, Gerald Claude Wood; and her brother, L.S. Newberry.
Survivors include her sons, Mark Wood and wife, Betty of Canyon, and Dave Wood and wife, Tracey, of Highland Village; three sisters, Gussie Tonne, of North Richland Hills, Vivian Pittman and husband, Bill, of San Antonio, and Doris Gifford of Alto, New Mexico; four grandchildren, Kristina Naseman and husband, Ryan, of Columbus, Ohio, Kelsey Wood and fiancé, Ephraim Lorenz, of Canyon, Jessica Wood, and Savannah Wood, of Highland Village; and many close friends who are considered extended family.
The family will receive visitors from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at Schooler Funeral Home Armstrong Chapel in Claude.
