Melvin Armstrong

July 1, 1934 — July 30, 2014

Melvin Armstrong, 80, of Amarillo, went home to his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 30, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at the Schooler Funeral Home Chapel located at 4100 South Georgia in Amarillo with grandsons, Dan and Nic Belcher, officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo.

Mr. Armstrong was born to Lesley and Edna Armstrong on July 1, 1934 in Lubbock, Texas.  He graduated from Olton High School in 1952 where he boxed and participated in FFA.  He attended Oklahoma Christian College in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and transferred to Abilene Christian College during his sophomore year, where he met the love of his life, Evelyn.

Marriage, children, grandchildren, and ultimately great-grandchildren followed and there were always four constants in his life: faith, family, service to others, and of course, Evelyn.  Together, he and Evelyn started the first-ever Sunday school nursery at San Jacinto church of Christ, fostered 27 babies for High Plains Children’s Home, and cared for numerous other older children, people down on their luck, as well as strangers that he came in contact with during the more than 30 years that he operated gas stations on 3rd street in Amarillo.

Mr. Armstrong and his wife were long-time members of San Jacinto church of Christ and also Central church of Christ in Amarillo, and later, when they moved to the Dallas area in 1993, they became members of Belt Line Road church of Christ.  After his wife’s death in 2011, he moved back to Amarillo and attended services at Childers Place—his home for the last year and a half of his life.

Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Larry and Beckie Belcher of Keller, Texas and Donnie and Lisa Bentley of Amarillo; a son and his wife, Clark and Kathleen Armstrong of Las Vegas, Nevada, a foster daughter Stephanie Bunge of Beaumont, Texas, a brother, Lee Roy Armstrong of Flower Mound, Texas and a sister, Sharon Kaye of Dallas, Texas.  Six grandsons; Ben Belcher, Jon Belcher, Dan Belcher, Nic Belcher, Justin Bentley, and Jarrod Bentley will serve as honorary pallbearers.  Additional grandchildren include Megan Hazelrigg, Katie Barr, and Zack Barr.  Mr. Armstrong is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren; Brandon Belcher, Olivia Belcher, Sophia Belcher, Julianna Belcher, Averylynn Belcher, Carsten Belcher, Bradford Belcher, Jacob Bentley, Kaitlyn Bentley, Braxton Galvan, Cooper Hazelrigg, and Paisley Colbert.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 6pm on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the Schooler Funeral Home.  A private burial will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will be at 5102 Farmers Lane, Amarillo, Texas  79110.  The family would also like to express their deep gratitude to the loving care provided to Mr. Armstrong by the dedicated staffs at both Childers Place and Hospice Care of the Southwest.
