Melvin was born in Lubbock County, Texas on May 12, 1935, the son of Loyd Melvin and Lois Crouch Downey. He married Patricia Ann McConnell in Pampa on June 8, 1956. The family then moved to Amarillo in 1959. He and Patricia celebrated 48 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on October 21, 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles Downey. He married Irene Doerfler-Moore in Amarillo on June 23, 2006.
Melvin retired in July 1997 as a conductor from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad after 38 years of service. He was on the Board of Directors of Santa Fe Federal Credit Union for 20 years. He loved turtles and the great outdoors. Greenbelt Lake was one of his favorite places.
Melvin was a devoted father, husband, “PawPaw”, friend and Christian who cherished time spent with his family and his Lord. He was a friend to all and took pride in helping others in every way he possibly could. He was a master of repairing lawnmowers for neighbors and friends and enjoyed tinkering with boats and jeeps. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus having joined the Catholic Church in April 2006
He is survived by his wife, Irene; his sons, Dwain Downey of Amarillo, Joe Downey of Boiling Springs, South Carolina; and Randal Downey of Amarillo, Keith Moore, Dale Moore, and Jonathan Moore all of Amarillo; his daughters, Cathy Lexa of Red River, NM; Angela Bachelor of Missouri; Brenda McCann of San Antonio; and Stephanie Moore of Amarillo; one sister, Wanda Wieters, of Glendale, AZ; a brother, Don Downey of Greeley, CO; 32 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
