Michael Criswell, 62, of Amarillo died Tuesday, September 18, 2012.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 22, 2012 at First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Larry Payne and the Rev. Robert D. Taliaferro officiating. Private family inurnment will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Michael was born November 19, 1949 in Tulia, Texas to Wilbur and Monty Criswell. Mike received an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Amarillo College in 1979 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Texas State University in 1986. He dedicated a 39-year career to healthcare. He started at High Plains Baptist Hospital on July 7, 1973 as a PT aide and transporter. Once he completed his nursing degree, he worked in the ICU where his compassion, attention to detail, and calming presence impacted many lives. He was known not only for the quality of nursing care he provided, but also for his strong patient advocacy. Mike eventually moved to a position as the quality improvement nurse for High Plains Baptist Hospital, promoting safety and quality for all care provided at the hospital. He worked as a case manager in rehab (Bivin’s Rehab) and finished his 39-year career at BSA as the manager of case management at BSA Outpatient Therapy Services. Mike not only provided quality care to his patients, he also added to the value of the work experience of his co-workers with his professionalism and integrity.
Mike was active in his community as a member of the Downtown Lions Club, the Toastmasters Club, and Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity.
Holidays were special events during his lifetime. He took great pride in decorating and preparing holiday dishes to welcome friends and family into his home. He also loved to travel. He and Tom traveled throughout the world, experiencing a multitude of cultures and making many friends along the way.
Survivors include his partner, Thomas Cummings of Amarillo; one brother, Terry Criswell and wife, Brenda of Sugarland, Texas; two sisters, Brenda Harbert and husband, Norman of Amarillo, and Carolyn Hearn and husband, Donnie of Maryville, Tennessee; nine nieces and nephews, Kevin, Debra, Melanie, Chis Harbert, Chris Hearn, Stephen, Angie, Monty, and Dana; and many more relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., Friday, September 21, at Schooler Funeral Home.
