Mildred "Millie" Francis Mathis

February 27, 1920 — November 11, 2014

Mildred “Millie” Francis Mathis, 90, of Amarillo, passed away November 11, 2014 in Amarillo.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 15, 2014 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Stephens and Rev. Scott Raines officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S Georgia, Amarillo, TX.

Millie was born on February 27, 1920 to Vernon W. and Martha May McEntire. She moved to Amarillo in the third grade and attended San Jacinto Elementary, Sam Houston Junior High and graduated from Amarillo High School.  Millie married her high school sweetheart, Erle Mathis in January of 1938.  They lived briefly in Shiprock, NM before moving to Arlington during Erle’s service in the Army (decorated WWII Veteran).  After the war the family returned to Amarillo until 1962 moving to Anchorage, Alaska (experiencing the 1964 earthquake) and Calgary, Alberta, Canada before coming back to Amarillo.

She volunteered in any and all of her children’s activities, in the Girl Scout office and at St. Anthony’s Auxiliary.  Millie was a charter member of St. Paul United Methodist Church which she supported and attended the majority of her life.  She loved family, friends, bright colors and pretty clothes.  She turned decorating for Christmas into a fulltime “hobby” and truly enjoyed sharing her Christmas spirit with everyone.  Millie’s optimism, spunky personality and great humor touched everyone and enabled her to get through very difficult times with great charm and grace.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Erle.

Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Tarbutton and husband George of Mississippi, and Judi Smith and husband Robert H. of Amarillo; son, Rock Mathis and wife Marci of Corinth; Granddaughters April Leonard and husband John of Eldon, MO, Lisa Chacon and husband Harold of England, Nikki Thompson and husband Bobby of Frisco, Misti Mathis of Amarillo and Lexa Smith of Amarillo; three great-granddaughters, one “honorary” great-granddaughter, and one great grandson; a brother in law L.O. Mathis and wife Vylna of Santa Barbara, CA; a sister in law Betty McEntire of Amarillo; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends who will all miss her.
